Radiator Width

If you were following my old thread I am going to get my BIL a raditor/grill stuff for Christmas and I am not looking to invest a small fortune. I called the bone yard and they start asking litres and other boneyard stuff.

What is the displacement on an 89 Diesel and how wide is the radiator?

Thanks and as before any other crosses or other hints to get things a little more reasonable would be great.
Scott

Assuming that it's the stock engine it should be a 7.3 liter (444 cubic inches) in the 89. If you go to www.partsamerica.com and enter the truck information you can check out the radiators they offer. It lists the measurements for them.

a diesel radiator and radiator support are completly different from gas truck parts.
don't even bother to try using gas parts, cause they will not work.
tell them you need the parts for a truck with a diesel engine, from years 87 to 91.

The woman kept saying, "I need to know what width it is, 31 or 37" This was after I told her it was a 89 w 7.3l Diesel. I dont know what her issue was, but her computer said there were two different widths and she couldnt tell me if either was in stock if I didnt know which one I wanted.

Just checked out www.partsamerica.com...guess what! They have two different sizes 31" and 37". That hurts the team. I hate to ruin the suprise and have him measure it, but if thats what it takes.

I would be surprised if someone did not go out and measure their 89 diesel truck for you.......... I would suggest the larger but not totally certain........

I can't remember for sure, but I think the narrow radiator was non AC trucks, but I think there was another thing that went with no AC before it had the narrow radiator.

Most I have seen were the wide one.

My 86 is 37" wide.

As with most parts, the safest thing to do is measure before you order something you can not use, and may have to pay a restocking fee to return.

The core supports are different.I found it hard to find a support for the 31'' radiator.

I don't know if it applies to the 89 years or not, but we have two 84 6.9's, the factory a/c radiator is huge, but the dealer a/c truck has an even larger radiator. It is a manual transmission truck , while the other is an automatic to boot. Give me some time, and I will get measurements on them for you.

Ok, all of the trucks that have factory air have 31" radiators, the one that has add on air is 37". I would most likely think it is a 31", but that is what I found here. BTW, only one truck has add on air, everything else is factory, all have a/c. The add on was originally without air of course...

My 86 had factory air, and a 37" radiator.

I guess the 37" could be a heavy duty cooling system option after thinking about it for a while.

That is odd, considering I even have an 86 parts truck, with the 31" radiator and factory a/c, and all 3 have the small rad, and the one that doesn't has the 37... it must have been an option. Geez, how did you get your intake mod past that monster????

A metal cutting recip saw is a wonderful tool.
Die grinder with a cut off wheel after that is a very nice tool to clean things up with.

Rather large pile after I was done.

My truck has both heavy duty cooling and heating.
When I need a heater core, finding one is usually a nightmare.

Last time I priced a radiator, with the last round of price increases is was well over 400 dollars.
37" wide 4 core.
