Nope, never heard of it. Sounds like something that would only really happen in a small town or rich community, though. Now, tipping your building superintendent? That one seems a little off to me. Tipping a doorman sounds right, that seems like it's gotta be a thankless job throughout the rest of the year.
Back in the day...in a galaxy far, far, away. Families often had a relationship or at least knew their mail person. Some had milk deliveries etc... My parents used to provide some sort of Christmas jesture whether it be in the form of cash or small item noting their appreciation. Now days, it just typically ain't that away. So no I do not tip these folks.
I do however tip a little higher to wait staff and such when we go out to eat this time of year. An extra $ 5.00 over the norm does not affect me much but, may help the gal at my favorite pub do a little something extra for her kids. Following my lead, my buddies tend to do the same. I have even been known to throw a $ 20.00 tip for a $ 10.00 breakfast before. Though not often.
We always get Carol, or mail lady, a little something. Hector and Juan get 50 bucks every year. The reason being , I put many things to the road that they should not take, and they always do without a gripe. I have even had them come in the yard to help lift a couple of heavey things into the truck. They have saved me alot of dump runs, so it's worth it to me.
When I worked at sears, people would occasional give me a little something (anywhere from $2-5) for loading their merchandise, especially around christmas. I always greatly appreciated that, especially since I was busting my butt for $7 an hour to make sure these people got ther $1500 plasma TV or $2000 refrigerator brought out and loaded carefully.
However, that was few and far between. More people preferred to give me an earful and tell me how they thought I should do my job.
society is becoming impersonal, so no things like that stuff back in the day is gone, with alot of other morals/values etc..
im not saying you have to have morals and values to tip, them days are just over in the majority.
weather it be a kid delivering newspapers/garbage men/mail man, its not part of the norm anymore.
our local garbage man back in mass lived about 1/4 mile away from me. he kept containers in his yard. i told him, give me a little better rate and let me drive my trash to your home and dump it myself.one trip a week on sat mornings. well he always put his bills in my doorway quarterly.
one day i came home and saw a pile of trash smack dab in the middle of my driveway. i go down and see him, says i didnt pay my last qtr. im like bud weve been doing this for 4 or 5 years now and this has never happened. i did find a bill in the bushes next to my door, and rain soaked and tattered up.
We've had the same mailman for years. I always give him $20 at Christmas for a job well done in all kinds of weather. Most everyone here in this area tip the mailman and newspaper delivery person. Don't be so cheap.....................
