holiday tipping ??? do you do it?

We always leave the mail lady something small (ornament, box of candy, something) for Christmas. We do with the Garbage man sometimes to. He just comes by at 5:00am so sometimes we don't get it to him.

I don't understand tipping the mailman. The one I have currently leaves me mail for someone a street away at least once a week, he walks across my lawn even though I have a nice walkway and he is pretty well paid for doing his job.
I will slip a few extra bucks for someone who does a personal service for me such as waiting on me or helping me load something heavy. Other than that, why tip someone who is doing their job?
I have never received a tip for doing my job.....
