Trouble Codes for EEC-IV?

I own a 1986 F-150 2x4 300-6. According to the sticker under the hood my truck has an EEC-IV computer in it. I have been having a TON of trouble getting my truck to run/idle/start/etc. and I've finally got everything tuned, but it still isn't right.

Does anyone know if/how I can get the Trouble Codes for an EEC-IV? Help and directions would be greatly appriciated!

Thanks,
Stone

Trouble Codes for EEC-IV?

I have been fighting an intermittent problem with starting and dying. Like turning the key off and back on. Sometimes it dies for 3min, sometimes for 3 hours but usually just a couple of minutes or on and off as I am driving but that was back in the 105 to 108 deg temps back in late August.

Finally it refused to start yesterday and nothing I can do will get it to go. Thank God! I sure hope it's broke and the garage can fix it now. Was towed today and hopefully will continue to refuse to start and when they get it fixed I'll post whatever it was.

It doesn't seem to like high heat or humidity. I have put on a rebuilt distributor, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, map sensor, temp sensor, EEC relay, fuel pump relay, alternator (lost that in Kansas), fuel filter and I am sure I am forgetting something.

Stone,

I found this link at one of these message boards. I hope it helps.
http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html
It tells you how to get the codes and more importantly it has a listing of the codes.

Trouble Codes for EEC-IV?

Thanks Towing Joe!

Big help, just what I was looking for. I've yet to try the jumper, and get the codes out, but at least I know what to look for.

Well the local Ford dealer assures me that they believe that it's finally fixed. Some of you may remember that I had an erratic miss and/or dying. Similar to most folks problems. Well it finally quit and had to be towed. They have had it for several days to diagnose and determined that there was a problem with the wiring harness. So we had them replace it. At least the part of it around the motor and not really sure how much that really is. Lot's of new plug ends etc. They have had it for a couple of days to hose down and see if it would act up again but seems fine for them. I go get it back tomorrow. There may have been less expensive ways to do this and maybe aftermarket parts would have been better, but once I got started replacing with Ford parts I kept with it, so to with the wiring harness. Looks like with the towing it is going to be near $500 which I will get the towing back. A bunch of money, but if it fixes it, worth every penny.

Carlos, your problem sounds like a bad TFI module. The early models had them mounted on the distributor and fail often due to heat. This is a common problem with early computerized Fords.

Well, picked up the truck. Noticed right off the bat that it started, high idled and then dropped to low idle, about 800 rpm, just like in the old days. Ran smooth all the way home. The intermittent miss that I always get about when the thermostat opens was gone. Didn't have a problem. Only time will tell if they really got it cured.

With the wiring harness they also replaced the ignition module again, just in case. Fourth one that has been on since August. The wiring harness unit is just the portion on the drivers side of the motor and plugs into the connections mounted on the inner fender and the various points on the engine. This thing seems to be running as good as my 1988 did and it ran real well.

Will let you all know if I have any more trouble. Oh yeah, never any bad codes to download with any of my problems.
