Power Steering leak

Hi.
I have a 1992 F-150 4x4 and the power steering gear is leaking form the input shaft seal. I know the seal kit in inexpensive but I am wondering how involved the replacement of the input seal is. I have replaced a number of sector shaft seals in different cars and am fairly mechanically inclined. Thanks for help

not much different than replacing it in others, however, the seal is probably shot due to pitting/corrosion on the shaft itself. If that is the case the new seal won't last very long either. Many have gone down this road only to replace the box for this reason. I think it is a crap shoot myself. I had the same issue and have prolonged having to replace the box by pouring in a bottle of Lucas Power steering stop leak.

That stuff swells the existing seal to prevent leaking. It worked for me and it has been 1.5 years now. I expect that it will go at some point and I will probably replace the box, though I have thought about trying to polish the shaft and replace the seal too.

I did it in my `87 F250. It is not that difficult. Once you have the drop arm off you just remove a snap rink and drop the seals and washers out. Make sure you note the order they come so you can put the new ones in in the correct positions. The whole job takes maybe 30mins if you have tools to hand. New seals were put in about 3yrs ago and are still good.

just a reminder that I'm talking about the INPUT shaft seal not the Pitman shaft or sector shaft seal, guys. Already put in some Lucas fluid.
