How many of you out there are running synthetic oil in your Ford? How many miles were on it when you switched? Did you notice any changes when you switched?
As for me, I switched to Mobile1 SUV & Truck full syn at 140,000 miles. The truck runs smoother and quieter. No leaks yet. I don't know if it has effected performance as I have not really measured power or economy yet.
I was just wondering about other folks' experiences.
well i had 240,000 when i switched to synthetic BUT i also rebuilt the motor completely and then switched. so technically ive been running since 0 miles.
I switched to mobile 1 right after I bought my old truck at about 165,000 and have no leaks or complaints. Mostly switched it over because I have other vehicals running it and the temps. Starts awsome in the cold winter temps without hesitation (was -25-35C for a few weeks and was -40 a couple of mornings) Engine does sound a little smoother and quieter at all temps. Performance and economy gain isnt measurable. I also run the synthetic longer. It seems to help keep the temp on my quad a few degrees cooler as well (My Kawasaki needs all the help it can get in that department)
I just switched a couple weeks ago to a synthetic blend...no change, i actualy find the ticks a bit worse when its cold..
maybe after i fix my leaky gasket ill get some royal purple..15 bucks a quart, yay
Maybe you've heard this a lot already, but your problem could be from a poor filter. Everyone here seems to swear by the ford filter (I beleive I heard bad reviews about fram) Apperantly around these forums switching back to the ford filter has fixed more than a few ticking trucks at start up.
I just switched to Mobil One High Milage blend. The truck, 94 F150SC with 8' bed, 302, had 110,000 on the clock but had a new short block 40,000 ago. Motor seems to run a little quieter now. Don't know about milage or performance as I never measured it to begin with. If I wanted milage I would have bought a YUGO.
Power gains with synthetic oil are real. When I was dynoing my ZX-11 years ago, Mobil 1 gave me 6 horsepower over the Castrol GTX that I had been using.
Many new high-end cars come from the factory running Mobil 1, including my '06 GTO.
I agree that you will gain some in performance and lower temps . Whether its noticable on my old truck? not really. On the powerblocks Trucks show they changed the engine and driveline oil on a supercharged 4x4 truck to synthetic and claimed a gain of like 20+ flbs of torque on a four roller dyno. That would be noticable, maybe ill try my driveline next (and a supercharger). But in no way shape or form do I think a cavalier with a V8 (sorry I mean GTO) is a high end car..... even if it runs mobile 1.
I tried switching mine from Castrol GTX to Mobil 1 syn. at around 102k and my leaky rear main started leaking about 10x more... I'd come outside after my truck sat for a day or 2 and there'd be a puddle of oil under it I switched back and it slowed back down to only a couple drops after parking. I won't be switching any time soon, maybe after I replace my rear main...

On the last oil change of mine I put that quaker state high torque full synthetic oil in...I was hopping that that would increase my mileage some but it didn't do anything...Plus i'lll be able to change my oil every 5,000 thousand miles...

Last I read synthetic oil is not recommended for use new motors until properly broke in. Its extreme ability to reduce all friction doesn’t allow a motor to “break in” if used to soon. Should always run conventional oil for the first 10 or 15k miles to allow the cam bearings and rings to seat properly.
All though the new cam bearings are “run in” in the very first minutes once its started up for the first time. The rings take several miles to do so.
If its not using any oil I wouldn’t worry about it now but if it uses some oil change to conventional oil for a few thousand miles
Motorcraft filter and Valvoline Sythetic Blend........only Valvoline will be in my trucks.Besides maybe Royal Purple....that's supposed to be some good stuff....IMO there is no such thing as a 5,000 mile oil....especially if it's QS....ha ha ha...Catch ya'll later.
