I just had 4.10 gears installed on my 94 F150 6er. Boy my truck has no problem taking off and its easy on the clutch. Also it has no problem with leaving other cars behind and I have good power to pass cars on the streets. I haven't taken it out on the highway yet. I do believe this is where my truck will guzzle gas, but I do 99% of my driving in city under 50mph. The engine revs a little higher to but these revs are within the power range of 2000 to 3400rpms. Just adding my 2cents to the message boards.
Let me know how it does on the highway. I have an 89 (see below for details). I believe the gears are still stock. It has good power, but struggles some to take off in 2nd. I'm thinking about 4.10's. I currently run about 2600 RPM at 70 mph. Not much interstate acceleration on the hills!
I loved both of my '94's I used to have w/ the 5-speed 3.55 rear-end. You didn't even need 1st gear. It barely lugged starting out of second. Man with 4.10's you could probably start out of third and pull a house off of its foundation in 1st
I'm sure some of you guys might not believe this but here goes nothing. There is this a**sh**e who loves to blaze about 35 to 40mph through me parents neighborhood. He drives a VW bug that's got some nice mods to it, but man he really pisses me off when he comes tearing up the street at 40mph (25mph zone). It's a nice neighborhood and there are at least 5 little kids under the age of 8 who live and play on this street. No matter how many people tell him to slow down he of course tells them to "f" off and gives them the "Don't tell me what to do" crap. Well I finally had enough of his crap so I decided to do something about it because nobody else wanted to. The only thing I could think of was this immature, 17 year old, brat d**khead hitting a kid and getting two months jail time for it. So I decided to do a towing test with my truck. I upped the idle, attached two tow straps to his VM POS and actually pulled this crapy car of his down the block to the local ditch. Dumped it there and left an appropriate message. I didn't think my truck would have the power but it did. I believe I smoked my clutch a little too. Probably will have to get a new one here again in about 10,000 miles because of this but damn did it feel good.
I did the 4.10 swap a couple of years ago, and I agree with you completely; a better, easier gear for stop'n'go city driving has not been invented (well, yes it has, too--4.56, 4.88, etc.)
I want to put 4.10's in my 6er too. I'm currently running 32x11.50's and the 3.55's seem a bit to sluggish on hills. I'm only worried about the highway performance, so let us know how it goes!
I was hauling a 24' center console (maybe 4800 pounds)back from a boat show last weekend and it pulled OK, but a set of 3.73s or 4.10s would really help me out. I'm not sure which would be most practical for my application. I would like to retain some reasonable gas mileage on the highway as it does see quite a bit of I-95 so I am thinking 3.73s? anyway I am curious like many others as to the 4.10s performance on the highway. Keep us posted!

I too have 3.08's (dang things) with 33" tires....it did, like you said, OK...but man...put a load on it and BOOM....where did all the accelation go? I feel that if you want the power and tow alot the 4.10's would do you best and I dont think it would hurt your milage too much. Lil trade off for more take off.....hey thats rhymes...haha...hoped i helped!

And CGL...the best gear for your size tire is about a 4.10 or a little lower. That should put you back to stock powerband. Might even help with the MPG's due to the fact that you are putting less strain on the engine.....
So far in town 4.10s do just fine and dandy!!! I have no problem driving around town and doing my daily weekend warrior. I like to romp around out in the New Mexican desert on the weekends and so far the 4.10s have allowed me to crawl over just about everything. To see just how far I can go I take a friend along who has a wench so if I get stuck, more than likely he will be able to pull me out. I'm thinking if I get a locker I will damn near be unstoppable. Of course that's just my ego talking and my butt will do the walking if I get to gusty. As for the highway the 4.10s have added some good high end passing power. At 55mph the truck will get up and move and allow me to pass in 5th. At 55mph the engine doesn't sound like its over reving and it actually handles better than the 3.31s I had. At 65mph I can hear the revs but it doesn't sound harsh and the engine doesn't seem to mind it either! MPG doesn't seem to be declining but I will post my mileage when I fill up again.
I'll keep the message boards posted on towing and highway performance as time goes along.
Again, at 70mph, my 300 is turning 2750 rpm, in Overdrive/Fifth, with a 4.10 axle, running 31x10.50-15 tires, speedo corrected using a 20-tooth gear. The engine really likes that RPM range, but is only returning 12 mpg (only city driving at present).
I'm tentatively planning a trip up to Michigan this summer, to take my 10-year-old to hang with Grandpa and Grandma while school's out. I may just have to go blast Sleeping Bear Dunes...
Well whattya know my grand parental units used to leave in Michigan! They lived in Vicksburg a little town not far from Kalamazoo! Now that you mention it where are the Sleeping Bear Sand dunes?! I would like to take a look at them one day. Oh remember to "Take along a friend who has a wench..." too! There a necessity if you get stuck.
I don't know why but everytime I write something on this message board, I somehow manage to word my sentences in a weird way. Dadgummit!!! Have fun Eddie!
Well guys I got good news and bad news. The good news is I can damn near all just about anything I want to within limits of the truck. This last weekend I hauled 800lbs of gravel for a friend of mine. This heavy haul was through city traffic. Takeoffs from full stops didn't strain the engine but I didn't rev it either or try to fly like a bat out of hell to the next stop light. Clutch work and engagement was as smooth as a babe's butt. I was surprised at how easy the 4.10s made this haul. They did a good job.
The bad news. My truck has gone from 15-17 miles a gallon to 10-12 miles a gallon. My truck has become an official gas hog. This sucks but its part of life. Just let ya guys know before you do this too. You may or may not want to do it but boy my truck feels unstoppable. I can crawl over just about everything and I have been able to keep up more often with my buddies 4x4s. Once I install a locker I will be able to stay with them on 80% of the trails hopefully.
I forgot I installed a new air charge sensor and EGR valve assembly over a month ago. This was before I installed the 4.10s and even then my gas mileage was going down (DUH!). So I disconnected my battery and reset the ECU. Give me another month and I will update my gas mileage with the 4.10s. Because my gas mileage dropped from 15-17mpg to 10-12mpg was to much for my brain to comprehend, so it came up with the memory I had not reset the computer when I replaced the two sensors. I hope this helps!!!
LAST EDITED ON 15-Feb-01 AT 10:10 PM (EST)[p]I have a 1968F100shortbox, I bought it with a 240 straight six, It came from the factory with the Dana 60 Limited slip and 4.10 gears, when I bought the truck the odometer said something like 45,000 so it could be 145,000 or 245,000 but it would get 17mpg easy, completely stock and never rebuilt. Town it got 13 or so, but I could drive 30-45 miles and watch the gas gauge only move the width of the needle, now I have a 360 and it takes 1/4 tank to go the same distance. Highway RPM is 3000@60mph since it has a 4 speed but it still pulled down 17 on the highway in a non overdrive vehicle. By the way, the ultimate demise of the engine came from a previous owner cutting the dipstick tube shorter and cutting the wire to the idiot light for oil pressure, and installing a manual gauge that didn't read right. The engine ran 131 miles on 1 quart of oil (I hadn't even had it for long enough to change the oil yet) Part my mistake too. but all in all a good combination from the factory. Only disadvantage to it is I feel much more confident to pull out on the highway with the 360 as opposed to the 240.
