Hey guys ive got a easy one for you tonight. i was wondering if somebody could tell me the difference between the 2 spots on the headlight switch....like when you pull it out to the first click what lights come on....and what lights are on when you pull it out to the second click?... There is no difference on my truck between the two...i just thought it was kinda strange to have two settings with no difference. Thanks
yeah somebody in the powerstroke forum just told me that. but with my truck there is no difference between the two because my truck has daytime running lights. shouldnt the headlights get brighter though when i pull the switch out?
Put your park brake on the DTRL will go out....now see what you have for operation.
DTRLs run off the excess alternator power...when engine running.
Note..... in cold weather when starting your truck the first thing to do is to engage the park brake, the DTRLs will go out and allow more power to the GPs..... release park brake after start.
ill check that in the morning when going to work. your saying put on the parking brake and see what lights come on when switch is in the 2 positions right?
plc7.3 i just ran outside right now to check that....and if i put my parking brake on then start the truck....i have no lights at all....i pull the switch out to the first position and the orange lights on the front of the truck come on and the cab lights and dash lights....i pull switch out to the second position and i get the same exact thing....no headlights come on at any position...then i release the parking brake and i get some kind of headlights which i assume are just the daytime running lights coming on.
thanks plc7.3. i really appreciate your help. i knew something was wrong with my lights...the DTRL arent very bright and its hard to see when driving in the dark.
First check all the fuses in cab fuse box..... then check the engine compartment fuse "A" that should be bottom LH side(closest to you) and "E" 5th one in same row.
My next thoughts would be the multifunction switch or the headlight switch.
I would first remove the headlight switch and check for burned wires/connector..... to remove the light ****..... put your hand up the back and press the little button on top and remove the ****/shaft OR find the clip just under the **** and using a hooked strong wire pull the clip gently towards you then remove the ****. Now remove the switch and connector..... separate the two and see what's going on.....
If the light switch and connector are OK then we need to test the multifunction switch. I have the test for it.......
ive already checked all the fuses in the fuse box in the dash....now the fuse box in the engine compartment is that on the drivers inner fender?
ive already replaced the headlight switch...the wires and connector all looked fine when i changed it.
where is the multifunction switch? ive never heard of it before
I will forward pics and test info to you.....using guitar_**** The MFS is the flash to pass and turn signal switch everything goes through it pretty much.....
alright thanks. ill have to wait till tomorrow after work to use the info you send me and check the MFS. hopefully i can figure out whats causing this. it sucks when i have to drive in the dark....the DTRL dont really help much.
Hey PLC im still having this problem and i was just wondering if you can get me that test info for the multifunction switch you mentioned earlier.
Ive just reread everything you stated before and you said to check....
The fuses in the cab....
The fuses in engine compartment....
headlight switch...
multifunction switch...
all fuses in the cab are good.
which fuses am i suppose to check in engine compartment?...how do i know which fuse is for what?
my headlight switch is brand new...
last is the multifunction switch...
The headlight power comes out of the headlight switch, and then goes to the dimmer switch. In the older trucks this switch was in the floor. Headlight switch power goes to this switch, and it puts the power on the lowbeams or the highbeams. This switch in the floor goes out frequently because it's down in the water and dirt in the floor.
I don't know when Ford went to the dimmer switch on the steering column, but the way it was instantly brought up in the previous posts(multi-function switch) you must have it on the column. They call it a multi-function switch since it is a turnsignal switch, hazard light switch and a dimmer switch all in one(it might be wipers too?). This switch is most likely your problem, and if you have a testlight or voltmeter, you can test it. Getting to it is the biggest problem.
