Question Two post lift problem

Does anyone know the inner workings of a two post screw type lift? Here is the problem, I have had a lift in my shop for about 15 years now and it has worked flawlessly during that time. The other day I put my F-150 on it and the lift went up about 3 feet and stopped. The motor continued running, but the truck did not go up. I am guessing that there must be a clutch somewhere in the lift (maybe at the electric motor) that is activating due to old age or wear. Has anyone here have knowledge of this problem?

Thanks,
Tom

Are there any belts that could be broken or slipping?

It appears that it is a direct drive from the electric motor on the column to the screw that runs vertically down the inside of the column. That being said, the more I think about this problem the more I believe that there must be a clutch of some sort at the motor that limits the weight to be lifted to its rated capacity as a safety feature. Maybe the clutch has worn out.

Thanks for your reply,
Tom

There is probably a rubber coupling and also a keyway, the rubber would degrade over time especially if the lift was kept well oiled, and keys shear.
