It has been awhile since I have been on here due to time constraints.
My truck won't start, I live in Florida it has been a little cold lately but I plugged in the block heater just in case, but no go. It cranks like a champ and tries atleast once to kick over with a little jerk and then a big puff of blue smoke appears. I can hear the glow plugs working, hearing does not mean that they are all workin, but I can hear something. Any tips would be appreciated. Note I am only a shade tree mechanic, nothing top notch if ya know what I mean. Thanks in advance.
the sound is a humming sound under the hood when I turn the key on. I just found that there is a CPS or (CMP) recall. Where is this little devil located. How can I tell if this is the problem without replacing it?
The humming sound is more than likely your vacuum pump. Take your truck to the dealer and they will check your cps and if it is the black one they will change it.
Ok, I ,just out of **its and giggles, went and tried to start it again after reading a past thread that said "if the tach does not move when cranking, then it is the CPS". While it was cranking and I was watching the tach bounce up and down it started. This is after approx 30 attempts and my batteries were about dead. Wow, any ideas?
That is what the CPS does when going out. Start / stop. wait start/stop.
You could also go to the dealer and buy a 25.00 gray cps and change it yourself. Takes a 10 mm wrench. Get under the truck and look passenger side of crank, will have a wireing connector on on it. Take the bolt out and pry it out with a screwdriver. Easy to do.
Even if it's not the CPS, it'd be good to have an extra... the sound your glow plugs working will make is sort of a click, from your relay coming on. This doesn't mean the glow plugs work for sure, just that the relay is giving them power, and that's what usually goes out on that area. If it's not your CPS, I'd check the GPR, and do a continuity test (ohm meter) of the power cord to the block heater, just to eliminate that as a problem. Mine went out same time as my last GPR, had me pulling my hair out till I found it!!
if you keep having the problem of taking multiple tries of cranking it over to get it to start, you might want to check the level of oil in your HPOP...there is an allen bolt on the top of the reservoir in front of the fuel bowl right on top..it should be no farther than an inch from the top
Seeing how as you are in Florida I doubt it is a glow plug issue. I am in South Carolina at the moment and believe it or not it was 21 degree's this morning and mine started without being plugged in. I cycled the glow plugs 3 times and it fired right up. The one and only time I have lost a CPS was back in the days when they were sticking us for about ninety bucks for the damn things. But my truck would start and quit time after time. Cough up the little bit of dough they are charging now and replace it. Takes about 10 minutes.
