so if anything (scale or casting sand etc.) is in the block, it is going straight to the oil cooler.
So in order to test your theory, we would need to see two 6.0 oil coolers of similar milage. One with a coolant filter, and one without. This way, we could all see if the coolant filters are truley making a difference, or if they both have the same junk in them.
Take any 6.0L with 60k+, that is not running a coolant filter, dip your finger deep into the coolant reservoir, and you'll know the difference. At 70K mine is still crystal clear and prestine. My brother's on the other hand, with similar mileage, has already gone through the EGR cooler twice and his reservoir resembles a mud bath.

It's not hard at all. The kit comes with instructions and everything you will need to install it (minus something to cut the hoses and a ratchet and socket set).
