My oldest son was T-boned by a drunk driver, in 2000.
His '93 Chevy Beretta GT was in showroom condition. We had literally just gotten the car out of the shop. (Had a new engine put in it!) That engine didn't have 250 miles on it.
The drunk driver that hit my son was driving down the sidewalk, and my son was turning into a fast-food joint.
The Beretta GT wound up looking like a "C".
The passenger seat was pushed over to the driver's side, the aluminum rims were broken at the hubs (all 4).
The car hit a telephone pole and spun around it and down an embankment.
Literally. . . the ONLY three parts of the car that weren't destroyed were the driver's seat, the driver's door, and the engine compartment.
My son walked away from that accident. The Anne Arundel County (MD) Police Dept. couldn't believe it!
My son was S O R E for a couple of months, and had bruises from the seat belt and shoulder harness, but, he walked away from that car.
The police locked up the drunk driver. He was driving his g/f's car, and driving w/o a license.
It was the drunk driver's THIRD conviction.
He got 3 years PROBATION and 6 months behind bars.
IMNSHO. . .if you get caught driving while drunk. . . just like the Monopoly game:
Go to Jail. Do NOT pass "Go." Do NOT collect $200.
IF you kill someone. . . I believe you should FRY.
GLAD YOUR SON TURNED OUT OK BLUEOVAL, that guy got off with only 6mts in jail that sucks, i hate the system.
I think they should have to dig the grave for that person by hand (if they were being buried) and made to tend to the grave for at least 5 years.. then be executed
The really sad thing is there are too many in a lot of states that lose their lisense and drive anyway. Also without insurance. This offence should be automatic jail time. I also second the penalty Dennis suggested,
last year, on 12-29, we had a 20 year old drunk driver in a jeep cherokee doing over 100 mph in a 25 mph zone. he came over a hill and broadsided a car in the passenger door, pushing the interior of the car, with the driver, out the driver side door, and then push what was left of the mess for 324 feet down the road, with the girls whole family watching.
they had to scrape the remains of the 19 year old girl off the street.
the driver already had 2 dwi's, was driving with no license, and admitted to drinking a 12 pack, a pint of vodka, and smoking a joint within 1 hour of the accident.
he walked away without a scratch. his 15 year old girlfriend front seat passenger ended up having her leg amputated in the crash. his 14 year old brother hit the windshield and is now a quadriplegic.
he just plead guilty in court to avoid a jury trial.
the judge threw the book at him and gave him 25 years to life in prison without an early parole option.
so he must serve at least 25 years before he can think about getting out.
his excuse for his actions was that he lived a hard life.
no apologies to the family of the girl he killed, the girlfriend or brother whose life he ruined, just that he had a hard life, and should be treated easily.
Was talking to a guy yesterday about this very topic and he shared a story about a good friend of his that lost his daughter to a drunk driver. Without going into details, his friend served justice on this 7 time DUI offender after he served time in jail.
Read an article on line from a little hometown news paper in N. Wis. A man was arrested for the 8th time for OWI .The 8 th time !! I couldn't believe it . I say one time is too many . Lock them up for a yr.Take their drivers license away forever . These people continue to drive after revocation anyway . A lady hit me after missing the stop ahead sign and the stop sign at an intersection less than 1/2 mile form home . I was p#*#ed off . I confronted her and asked wtf was her problem ? She said she did not see the signs . Guess what her condition was ? This was 5:30 in the afternoon . She was lucky I was not driving my prized '52 or she would have had more medical problems .
The one who killed my niece is facing a second degree manslaughter charge in Connecticut. He hid from the law for two months after the accident. His additional charges are driving without a license, DUI, and running a red light. He is pleading not guilty.
Funny how things work out...A couple hours after his warrant went out, he was arrested and charged with three counts of larceny and two drug related charges. He and his girlfriend were caught in the act of stealing from a local business.
He still denies being the driver of the car even though there were witnesses including the cop on scene. His DNA had to be removed from the airbag to prove that he indeed was driving (my niece was in the passenger seat) and ran the red light and subsequently ran in to the other vehicle.
I hope to be able to go to the trial for a couple reasons. I'd like to tell this POS what he has done to us and most importantly to be with my sister. I just hope I can maintain my discipline and keep from going after him. Prayers would be handy...
