running rough

hi its my first post here, was reffered by one of the mustang sites im on

i have an 89ntoch and just picked up a 1990 f-250 with a 351 and c6 trans 2X4
extended cab and extended bed

ok down to the problem now,

basically the truck runs great 70% of the time, the other 30% it has a ruff idle and dies. i will start the truck then it will start them sputter and die, in order to keep it running i have to 2 step it. sometimes when its about to die the CEL will come on, other times it wont.

the one thing that i notice (could be a coincidence thou) is that when the truck is going to act up the volt gauge ***** between about 8v ant 12v but when the truck is running good its a rock solid no movement gauge. and it doesnt boob on voltage when it is about to die, i can be driving down the road cruising and it will boobble, thats kinda a warning that i will have to 2 step it

i went to pull codes with my little cheap *** blinking light scanner and i couldnt get it to work, im going to try again tomorrow with changing the 9v on the scanner if not i will try the CEl method (i am familiar with pullng codes as i have done it a million times with my 89 notch)

im trying to avoid doing the CEL method as it is about 10 degrees here in chicago and this truck just doesnt want to fit in the garage

thanks for any help guys
