Talking Started at -4

Well since I bought my truck last winter I have always needed to
plug it in whenever the temp dropped below 30 or so. I had been following
the various threads regarding hard starting and was always wondering
if my glow plug system was up to snuff and almost ordered a new GPR
the other day.

Then last week there were a couple different threads regarding the LED
indicator mod to let you know when it truly turned off instead of waiting
only for the "WTS" light to go out.

I decided to give this a test and did not plug the truck in Friday night. It
got to 4 below overnight. I went out to start and left the key in the "On"
position for about 2 minutes. It fired right up!

I have not plugged it in since! No question here just relaying my expereience
and letting everyone know that I am going to do the LED mod as soon as
it warms up a bit.

Sorry about the long post!

gotta love knowing nothing is wrong with the truck, just that the WTS light was not designed to indicate what we all thought it did.

Good post. I do the same thing when it gets cold enough here. I think it was 32* this morning.

Yes it's nice when you don't have to plug in, but the truck warms up faster when you do. I like to since I'm only a 15 min. drive to work. Gonna put that LED mod in as well.

Dont use the truck much in the winter but Im gonna do the LED mod too just so I know when its working. I start it up about twice a week in the cold weather & havnt plugged it in yet. Usually just wait about a minute with key on and she fires right up. Coldest night weve had in awhile was last night - 10*

Hey, I've got a question, has any one besides me thought of hooking the gpr up to the gp/wait to start light in their gauge cluster? 'cause I'd like to combine that project with turning the dummy temp gauges into active gauges by changing the circuitry in the cluster.

Sneak, I like that idea of using the wts light. Let us know how this goes if you
figure that out. I am not good at all the electrical stuff.

Normally I will continue to plug it in but I was worried about times
when I would go snowmobiling and maybe not have access to an
electrical source.

Jay, I'll get to it as soon as I get a good amount of time to think about it.
I have yet to do the coolant and trans analog mod, but figured this would
be a great one to do at the same time.

Right now I'm also trying to figure out the parts and procedures to do a
tc lock/ebpv brake combination with three on positions.
I'm hoping I can use a circuit board for at least a portion of the switching assembly.

It would be nice to try and figure out what else could be done while everything is apart.

Yep, it's good to find out it is up to snuff. I have started mine at -22 F without plugging in. It chugged and smoked a good bit, but it ran fine.

My truck started at -10 about a week ago, so I like knowing I can do that.

So being the slow one here and from what I am reading When the WTS light goes out the glow plugs may not be ready for a start and the key should be left on a bit longer for a full heat according to conditions? I take it there is a LED mod that will determin when the glow plugs are ready after the WTS light goes out? I must have fell asleep somewhere????

Depending on temp the GP's might stay on as long as 2 min

WTS is just a dummy light
