Well I got a letter the other day from the local zoning officer. It says that I have 15 days to get rid of all of my cars!! Well I have about 100 cars sitting on my property and it would be impossible to get rid of them all in that ammount of time.
Those cars have been there for years and no one evrer said anything before, you cant even see them from the road and I have no neghbors.
So I was wondering what can they do to you if you dont comply?
and does anyone know how I would go about fighting this?
Something similar happened close to me last year...I don't know if the guy was fined or anything, but the county came in and hauled off the cars...
But this guys place was right on the road in plain view and it took a bunch of people to complain before they finally moved his cars...If your place can't be seen from the road/neighbors, I really don't see what the problem is...
I dont see the problem eather these cars have been there longer than Ive been alive, I just inhearited the place and all the sudden they pose a big hazzard.
Due to the length of time they've been there, maybe you're covered by a 'grandfather' clause. Worth looking into. The zoning may have changed over time and your realation who passed was exempt, as the new owner, you are not. Since you inherited and did't purchase this property, you may qualify for an exemption (or an extension at least).
They may have known the cars were there and were just waiting for ownership to change. But I think code enforcement officers are like law enforcement officers in that respect, unless you had a locked gate they forced open I don't think there's anything you can do about that. We call them the 'junk cops' around here, but you don't usually have a problem unless there's a complaint (there may be one you don't know about) or it's visible from the street.
You can probaly call the zoning dept to get a extension on the time, something similar happened to a person down here and zoning was more than willing to work with him.
Being curious here but would any of those old cars be Ramblers by chance?
Maybe they think you are running a commercial enterprise in a residential area. You need to (nicely) talk to them and work something out otherwise they may just haul everything off and stick you with the bill.
Yup, what Steve said, go in and talk to them. Let them know you agree their not worth anything and that you intend to move them but there is no way you can do it in 15 days. If you have a plan they should work with you.
go to the zoning office, and ask for more time to get things taken care of. then talk to one of the local scrap dealers about them cleaning up the cars. you may be surprised at how much they may offer you for them. then, once you have an agreement in hand with the scrap dealer, go to the town zoning office with the papers showing you are going to take care of the problem. this should make everyone happy.
In post# 8 you said getting rid of them would not be a problem.
You better do something, if you can't show the titles and the police come down there, you are in a world of hurt.
