Generally-enamel. Lacquers were GM. If you use acrylic enamel to touch up you be ok. Also original paint was baked and less likely to lift. Clean it good,and scuff sand and mask and try the acrylic enamel. I touched up my original raven black 56 -the dash is still original and touched it up,and looks nice.
V.w. and Datsun,etc--used straight enamel and the factory packs that I would use ran like crazy if someone opened the booth door,and changed temp. Real pain in the butt!! I still use lacquer occasionally,but the base-coat,clear coat single/2 stage -either way works great. Hate to paint over a nice original ole effies paint---makes me tear-up!! LOL Bill
