1976 F100 Explorer
here is my VIN.
1976 Ford F100 Exlporer
VIN: F11YRB50872
Here is my closest guess as to what it means:
F100 -
V8 - 360cid - 2BBL carb
Built in San Jose, CA
Front Axle: 4.55 M.S. 3000lb Dana44F
Rear Axle: 3.73 5050lb Dana
Is there any other information that my VIN is hiding?
What were the production numbers on this truck?
Is this a rare truck?
The truck is a Copper Metallic - W-White with styleside White Bodyside Accent Tape Panel. Short Box (6.75ft).
It runs really high for an old truck. Not sure if that qualifies it as a HighBoy? Whatever that is...
Anyways, I've been looking for weeks for this information and thought this site would be my best guess. From the information i've learned about Old Model Ford already, i think i'm in the right place.
Thanks a million!
Mike
No, yours is not a highboy. Only F250s could get that classification.
If your truck hasn't been molested, the build sheet may still be lurking around inside the cab, usually underneath the dash, carpet/floor mat, inside the back panel of the seat or under the seat. You'll just have to look because it may be anywhere hidden from view inside the cab.
VIN: F11YRB50872
F11- F100 4x4
Y = 360 2v
R- built at San Jose
B50872 - consecutive build date (February 1976)
Front Axle: 4.55 M.S. 3000lb Dana44F
Rear Axle: 3.73 5050lb D
One of these axles is Wrong.
You cannot have such a large difference between ration.
I suggest the front axle is also 3.73
The axles ratios have to be identical or very close.
ie:3.54 F w/ 3.54 R
4.10 F ..w/4.11 R
My brother is the current owner of the Truck, he wants me to buy it for $500. Which i think is a great deal. It's leaking oil like the Valdez, but with a little TLC is could be a kick *** truck.
Thanks guy,
one question though, what is the Consecutive build number?
Is there some resource on the web that will tell me what Pruduction numbers are? Like how many were built?
Thanks again.

This is the number that each and every vehicle gets attached to it for helping in identification purposes to differentiate it from other vehicles
Ie: License plate tags
Each plant that build trucks had their plant code in the VIN as well.
here's the list from the year your truck was built.

Production numbers available only state certain things.
My book is downstairs
Does this mean that there was somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 Ford F-series & broncos produced in 1976?

I don't know what the order of the day was back then with assembly lines.
I do know that in Jan 2003 they could make 500-600 Expy's & Navigators in a 10 hour shift.
I have so many books in my library I don't know where to start to look for assembly line/plant logisitics.
Look for the AXLE Code. Post what you find.
You can include all the data you find on the plate...Dennis or I can decode it.
Note: the AXLE CODE will decode the rear, it may not decode the front..blame Ford.
Back then, Ford didn't always include the front axle ratio in the axle code of 4WD's.

Is this truck rare? Moderate? If restored what could it sell for? (not that I ever would)... Would it be wise to make modifications (different engine, transmission, axles, suspension, audio, dashboard components, etc...) or would it be smart to keep it as stock as possible?
Loaded question, i know. sorry. But the reason for all these questions, is to find out how rare this truck is... Say on a scale of 1 -10. 1 being common, 10 being rare.
Any thoughts?
