I have a 98 Explorer 4.0 SOHC and noticed that on the underhood label it says to see the owners manual for procedures on removing air from the cooling system when flushing and replacing coolant. I can't find anything in the owners manual or on this website as to what the procedure is. I have a Haynes manual and it says to fill the system and squeeze the top radiator hose to burp the air out. Is there anything more to it than that?
ok, the procedure is to put the cap on then back it off to the first stop, which will leave the cap loose, but not removed. Run the engine till it warms up. This will cause the fluid to circulate and the thermostat to open. Once it has warmed up, turn the engine off, and let it stabilize for a moment and carefully remove the cap. Refill the radiator and repeat. On the second run, double check the fluid level and if all is well, fill the coolant recovery tank to the hot level. Allow the engine to completely cool, which will draw fluid fromt he recovery tank into the cooling system and tighten the cap. You are done. Keep and eye on it for any leaks or abnormal behavior for a short while. If everything is good for at least 30 minutes of run time, chances are you got all the bubbles out. Any minor bubbles will gradually purge themselves.
No, thats a good idea, that way the heater core and hoses are all below the level of the neck in the radiator and it should be easier to get more air out.
