I have a spool(same effect) in the rear of my 79 in my sig, and the only problem is the tires chirp around corners.
Not that big of a deal. Just change driving habbits, and it isn't as bad.

The spool is in the rear, and I would say there is zero understeer, but if there is any, it is not noticable.

I don't live around ice, but I have heard it isn't good on wet/icy roads.

For real cheap, the few small down sides are worth it to have a very reliable 'lock' for traction.

i've had a couple and i loved it! my bronco (in my sig) is welded front and rear. the white truck (R.I.P.) in my gallery was welded front and rear. the rears did wear out a little quicker but to be honest due to the soft compound of the iroks, i think they did very well! i had no understeer but it was a long bed supercab.

Weld it double your traction for the price of a couple of litres ofgear oil. The d44 on my 79 f-250 on 39.5 tsl's works great. Going to due the same to the rear before the spring thaw. mud season!

well, i welded the axle yesterday. I love it. Not as bad on the road as I thought. Only time its even noticable is on really tight turns at a stop sign or something. But on the highway it is great. It actually drives better in a straight line now than it did before. And in the mud it is like nothing else.

In my experience I can go places in 2wd where normally it took 4wd with my detroit in the rear. When you think about it....a open front open rear will usually only spin 2 tires....a detroit spool or welded rear will spin 2 tires all the time. Basically its the same.

My Bronco is welded up front, mini in the rear (for now till the 60s are dropped in) and you can tell very little difference when on the road, mainly because it is a shorty (shh,, Don't tell the cops! [no title!!]) But if you are worried about breaking something on the front,, leave the driver's side unlocked till ya need it! Then,, let the mud fly!!
