It is not a simple job, but it can be done. The cubby hole is not the same size or shape. You can cut your dash or replace that portion with one from a newer truck. Riggz just got done doing this in his 04, so you should try to get his input.
If you want a much cheaper alternative you could just install switches like I did on my 99.
They aren't as nice, but they worked well and cost less than $50 including the relays I installed.

If you just need switches Beerstalker's method is quite nice and cheap. I however loved the look of the upfitters and wanted that extra storage box so much that I went with the 05-07 upgrade. It's not a direct fit, but it's pretty close. You'll have to cut some of the plastic here and there to make it work, but once you're done it looks nice. Some have just purchased the upfitters and made it fit in the 04 dash. They had to fabricate some sort of plexi or fiberglass to fill the hole next to the switches. If you go the way I did, you'll need the center dash section, a new trash hook, and a new cup holder. I have all the part #'s for the gray dash like pictured if you want.

that is awesome man that's perfect, can you give me the part numbers needed to do this, and roughly what was the cost for this ??
I worked on some switching needs over the weekend in my 01 F350.
I have manual lever 4x4, and where your pictures show the 4x4 dial switch is where I actually have (had) a backup sensor button.
When I removed the dash, I took out the whole black plastic insert that held the button assembly and relocated it to the bottom right of the instrument cluster in the plastic. Used a dremel and homemade template to cut the hole.
This left the old hole in the dash to mount a 3 toggle led panel set of switches that im using to turn my amps on and off, lights on bull bar, and inverter or heated mirrors. So far just have one switch hooked up.
