If it doesn't default to defrost when you switch it to 4wd it shouldn't be a vacuum leak. It defaults to defrost because it tries to send the vacuum to the hubs and it bleeds it from the air controls. No default usually means no vacuum leak. Now on to the dash lights. The lights show the position of the transfer case not the hubs. While the switch on the dash does tell the PVH to send the vacuum pulse to the hubs and tells the transfer case to shift, the dash lights just tell you the transfer case position. The transfer case is electrically operated and really has nothing to do with the vacuum hubs other than they operate by the same dash switch. Do I have everyone totally confused now?

p.s. To the OP: I have no idea, nor does it make sense to me, that your dash lights wouldn't work with the hubs in auto but then work when you lock the hubs in manually. The transfer case should shift into 4wd (and thus the lights should light) whether the hubs ever lock in or not. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.
alrite well after further review i was driving my truck home tonite and tried the ac trick again and after driving for about 10 seconds it did switch over to defrost.. so i do have a vacuum leak and now im gunna order the hoses from dieselsite.. thanks for all the resposes cant get enuf of this site with all the great people out there lookin to help a fellow ford boy
Before I ordered hoses I would disconnect the hoses and pinch them off one side at a time and try to pinpoint if it really is the hoses. It's very possible that your vacuum leak could be inside the hubs themselves in which case new hoses will not help.
It could be the hoses, the PVH, the lines under the dash, the hub seals or all the above. I think Texas Outlaw has the right idea. Do some testing to figure out where the leak really is before you just start replacing parts. Unless you just want the new hoses whether that's what's wrong or not.

That is my problem. The seals in the hubs are bad. I plugged the hoses and I am just using them in the manual mode. Anyone know where to find replacement auto locking hubs?
Could be the knuckle seal, Hub Yellow Oring or the ESOF seals. This is why my truck has manual hubs on it now. TOO MANY things to go wrong. I do miss the luxury of not having to lock the front in "Just in case I need it", but at least I know it's there if I throw the switch to engage the transfer case and the Warns are locked in.Check out Powerstrokeshop.com or a company called Quad4x4.
Thanks for the info. I have the auto locking with manual override, but the auto is so much easier than having to get out to lock them in. Especially when you are deep into mud before you realize you need them.
I am in manual mode now, works good but inconvient. I just bid on some used hubs on Ebay. Guy guarantees them to work. I will give them a try if they are cheap enough.
Can you just turn the hubs we have on our trucks to the lock position if your auto hubs arent working until you can switch over to the warn manual hubs to get you thru the winter so then at least you would have 4 wheel drive if you need it ?

Yes, that's what the lock position is for. Just in case.

That is what I have been doing for the last year and plan to keep doing until I find another set of the autos.
$65 for a set of lines, thats actually not too bad. Especially considering the fact that you wouldnt have to work about the lines leaking for the rest of the time you have the truck.
