No Stepside on Ford's (GM term) .....Ford = Flareside

Topic:
Once the engine is at normal operating temp... feel both heater hoses.

They should be really hot.

If they aren't you have a flow problem.

(hoses hooked up backwards)

What temp value T-stat did you install ?

195*F...... I hope

Check with defrost mode

Just repaired mine/or my sons- after taking it apart i found the previous hack removed the thermastat.

Check that thermastat is installed with valve facing motor- long part

Check that the inside air vents are not clogged with debris. *removed a mouse house and a 1' pile of debris.

Make sure you have enough liquid/coolent to make the system work

If the fan is blowing on all speeds its working- unless clogged

Also test in Defaust mode as the lower vents may be clogged- if driving you may also get cold air in if the vents are not closed well.

Also as Million says use a 195 stat if you want heat. Im in CT and need all the heat I can get.

Regards

It should be 195*

These engine were designed to run at 200-210* F

Too cool and they will be less efficient can wear faster.

Yes the hoses run a certain way.
which engine

What state do you live in?

A 180 is more of a summer T-stat, you should change that out for a 195. Have you let the truck run for a bit and felt the heater hoses? They both should be very hot to the touch. Post up from there and it gives us a better idea as to what to look for.

Some of these trucks have a garden style turn off in one heater hose, to
keep the flow out of the cab in the summer, mostly on (AC)trucks, but I have
ran across the turn off on some non(AC) trucks!

P.S. the water in the hose still gets a little warm! Also make sure the water
valve is opening, it works off a cable.

The following is correct for A/C trucks, the shut off valve was only used F500 and larger trucks. Someone added the shutoff valve.

1973/79 F100/350 with factory A/C.

D4AZ-18495-A .. Vacuum (Operated) Heater Water Valve (Motorcraft YG-136)

This valve is plastic/metal, splices into the heater hose at the right rear passenger side of the engine compartment. On the top of the valve is a nipple for the vacuum hose.

This heater water valve was a POS from day one, and has been on Ford's "All Time" parts best seller list since 1974. Many have been removed, or something subbed in place of it.

BTW: Also fits 1971/1990 Ford Crown Vics / Lincoln Town Cars / Mercury Grand Marquis without ATC.

the heater core isn't allowing coolant flow. try reversing the hoses and see what happens. both hoses should be hot...if one is cold, you can assume that there's no coolant in it (at lease not coolant that is in circulation). if not, your heater core might be blocked, new or not.
