I am having a problem with my '86 F-150 with a 302. It has always ran fine untill yesterday,it started missing badly and back firing thru the intake manifold. It did this for about 3 minutes then ran fine. Its done this several times since. I checked the timing and fuel pressure, both ok. When I checked the timing and pressure the engine was running fine. I scaned the ECU and nothing there. Has anyone had a similar problem? Thanks in advance.
Since you did'nt get any codes, I'd look closely at the ignition system also. Check for a cracked distributor cap, bad plug wires, or cracked spark plug porcelin. Maybe mist the wires down with a windex bottle at night (or in the dark) so it will be easier to see any arcing.
Timing chain could be bad on an engine that old, but it's not something that typically fixes itself and gets better. Well, it could jump time and get back on the right tooth but that's sort of unlikely.
I did a little research on the web and found there were several service reminders to dealerships from the mid '80s thru the early '90s concerning the TFI. The main problem
was a no start or no idle problem, but there were some driveability problems similar to what I am having. Going to get module checked tomorrow.
Thanks
