5 speed tranny
I redone the outer bearings on my 97 F-150 4x2 rear end with 223,000 miles now I need to refurbish the gear lube in the 5 speed tranny, What I need to know is does the tranny use the same special lube as the rear end.

You might want to look for a good synthetic Mercon or Dex III. Or even better yet is to use a synchromesh manual tranny fluid. It is close to ATF in viscosity but is better suited to a manual tranny do to it's EP and AW additives. I have that tranny in my 2002 F-150 and it did not like the factory Mercon. A lot of grinding when the outside temps got into the mid 40's and above. I've tried a semi-synthetic ATF and it helped somewhat. I went to a 75-90 G-4 manual tranny fluid which helped even more but was tough to shift in the winter. I'm now using Royal Purple Synchro tranny fluid and it shifts better in the cold but not as nice in the warmer temps as the 74-90 but alot better than the ATF. My tranny seems to be real picky about fluids. I had the same tranny in a 1989 F-150 and it ran fine on the factory Mercon.
