I just came across this site. Great! I live in Calgary too and want to install a Wabasto coolant heater in my 2002 F350 7.3 liter turbo diesel as I am sometimes 200 miles from the nearest electrical outlet in winter in the mountains.
Where do or did you find the best place to put the unit? There does not seem to be any room in the engine compartment. In front of the radiator??
Would appreciate any experienced advice from people who have done it and had success or otherwise.
Anybody install one of these in a Super duty? Would like some suggestions?
Local International dealer is selling the TSL-17 heaters for $700 and I would like to install it myself. Was quoted $2400 installed by a local company that deals Webasto.

I also live up in Calgary and I'm a mechanic. I've done a bunch of research on Espar and on the TSL 17. I'm looking at installing one in the fall. Doesn't look to terrible. Where I live I have no option to plug my truck in so at temperatures the reach -45C with a windchill the truck will not start period, without some kind of aid. The current draw and fuel usage on either unit is minimal. These units are only going to take and hour to heat the entire cooling system. I would highly recommend the purchase of the timer with one though. That way you can set it to come on and it will be ready when you are. So as log as you have half decent batteries there is no worry about you truck not starting. Espar - HYDRONIC 5 http://www.webasto.us/press/en/am_tr...aters_823.html

Best regards,
From the info I've been able to find best location is passenger side frame rail.
I am thinking of mounting it as high up as we can to protect it from water when fording streams. Perhaps some additional bracing if we put it at a higher location, I guess.
I just finished installing a TL17 Webasto in my 2003 F250 7.3L.
After careful inspection, I mounted the heater inside the right corner of the front bumper. It will mount to one of the bumper brackets with minimal modification. I ran the wiring and fuel line across inside the bumper and back along the frame with the factory block heater wiring. I installed a piece of mudflap rubber to prevent spray from the wheelwell from the Webasto unit.
I connected it to the driver side battery.
Ran the switch wires through on of the grommets on the firewall on the drivers side.
The fuel line and fuel pump wires just run back along the inside of the left frame rail.
I dropped the fuel tank and installed the extra pickup into the tank and mounted the fuel pump on the frame just ahead of the fuel tank.
The heater hoses run back along the right frame rail, and up the gap along the right side intake pipe and "T" into the heater hoses. I installed ball valves to ensure I could stop coolant flow through the Webasto if required.
It took 2 days of shop time, working slow, measuring everything 2 or 3 times and getting it right the first time. So far so good.

Hi I just did one in an 06 F350 and an 04 Excursion the front passenger bumper is where I mounted ours too. I contacted webasto and they e mailed their instructions for these trucks and that is the spot they recommended. First one took a bit of time but not too bad. Worth the time and effort for the Manitoba climate!
mine was in the 80 freightliner and it pumped water to the heater and block and the heater fan had to run so by morning my batterys were dead....i gpoot ride of the thing,,,,
