Brian, I am going to make it a priority project for me to transcribe his video just for you.
Does that mean I need to order the video now?
I actually spoke to him (E-mail) about the captioning. He said I was the first person that every asked about it. He said he would look into it if there were enough people asking.
I doubt that every happens though. Truthfully, I have met a lot of people who are deaf, but I have never met one who was into cars for some weird reason.
Back to the body hand tools for a moment, there have been some bargains going down on ebay the past week! Saw an assortment of Dollies slappers and spoons, 14 pcs sell for <150.00 that's just over 10.00 each! saw a number of quality hammers go down for < 30.00 each.
I have bought many auto-body tools from TP TOOLS and they are in hemmings magazine and most of the hot-rod books,etc....They are near us in Canfield,Ohio, and have some quality tools such as Martin Hammers, etc.
It is unfortunate that some ''hot rodders'' will NOT sand and paint a car, because they only want a perfect job. I have heard this all my career that they are not going to ''waste'' the cost of materials because it will not be like the cars/trucks they dream-of and that is a shame!! I am a believer that -try try again!!! This is reason I have so many tools, and I try--and for sure not as good as I once was. The guys who cry--I want a show-car and will not try to refinish a project are missing out on a eye-opening of how hard and time consuming real great jobs are. I do believe you can do it!! I also believe after you do, you will not be qas critical of others ----my belief---please don't get offended......I just think that with some effort -you too can refinish a great truck--or car---or boat!!!! sorry---pain meds are effecting my ranting!! LOL .....Bill---ohh the pain!!!!!
Some people want perfection. There are not many professional shops out there that can achieve the (close to perfection) needed for vehicles like the "riddler award" winners.
Unless people try, they will never know what they are capable of. I do not pretend to be a body man. I did some body work (rather crudely) years ago. I did not have the benefit of the Internet and advice from people with way more knowledge and experience than myself.
It amazes me just how much (free) knowledge and help is available to anyone who will listen (read).
Me personally, I will try and try and will be proud of however my truck turns out. I will be able to say I did it myself.
I do not have a fancy garage loaded with every tool known to man. I will make due with what I can afford as time goes along.
I am not setting my expectation beyond the reach of an amateur either. I want a decent looking driver. Nothing more.
Now..if I had cash to burn..I might pay a shop to shoot the final paint. That is not possible.
In the same vein, I'd MUCH rather see cars done mostly, or all, by the owners, over cars where the owners have just thrown money at them. Perfect cars are most often owned by the very rich, with little, or usually, no grease under the fingernails. GREAT cars are owned by those that do as much as they possibly can, the best that they can. By no means perfect, usually, but those are the ones I personally look at...
Another favorite of mine are the cars that are "joint" efforts...two or three guys, each with different talents, helping each other build cars, so that all benefit from their talents.

the interim PO of my '48 is like that. He has a '69 Coronet RT that he paid to have the paint and body done. But when it comes to engines, originality (proper pieces for true-restoration), and driveline, he's really good. He's just not a bodyman. And unfortunately, not a Ford guy, lol. The one thing I might not get done myself is upholstery. Not that I can't do it, I just don't have enough experience to do a stellar job.
I agree with the upholstery...I'm planning on a Ranger seat, and preferably, I can find one great shape, right color, etc, etc. I don't want to buy a good sewing machine, just to do the truck, when there are so many people that can do a great job...Terry (Truxx1956) comes to mind...that would be another road trip to Kentucky!!
I didn't realize just how little attention I pay to the high dollar "show trucks" until I came home from the 06 supernats. I found out what truck won the top honors. I remember walking past it a few times, but I never once looked at it up close and there are no pics of it in my gallery.
I look at the trucks that average people built and trucks that are actually driven.
Upholstery is one thing I cannot do though. Hopefully...what is in mine (already done) holds up for a long time.
Terry (Truzz1956) said he will explain to me how to add some padding to my seat if I ever get to that point.
I bought my Martin set from Eastwood some years ago. They haven't failed me yet. Like AX says, you don't need to be in a rush. You can add as you go. I finally received my chopping and sectioning dvd from Ron Covell. I like it. I'm thinking of getting some more. He has a selection of videos to choose from that may help in your learning the body hammer and dolly.
I'll echo the Martin tools from eastwood. a few years back I picked up a genreal purpose pick hammer, a shrinking hammer, and general purpose utility dolly and have loved them. I can't remember but I don't think I paid more than $30 for each piece.
Just ran out and checked, never paid any attention, but my favorite hammer is indeed a Martin! I haven't done a lot of body work in years, so the tools are in cold-storage, but they are soon to be put back into service...or not! Maybe this is a good reason to buy some new tools!!
I have a bro-in-law that has been restoring a Corvette for the past 14 yrs or so. I should say----he has had this vehicle in 6 or more body shops and has thrown over 30,000 dollars at this thing and a yr ago, hauled it all home in our 28' enclosed car-trailer , still in pieces!!!! He wants PERFECTION!! No-one can do anything on this car to please him!! Now----he wants me to buy it for 20,000 bucks and finally be done with it. NO WAY!! I have tried relentlesly to teach him to buy some tools and try it,himself. There are so many people out there, and internet help--like FTE--but for Corvettes, and he thinks that buying tools is a waste.
He will not be happy, unless Foose or someone did the rest of the car,but that won't happen. SOME PEOPLE WON'T TRY,and they lose out on the satisfaction we all get from attempting to fullfil our automotive dreams by trying, and trying, and trying till it is good enough to please yourself!!! sorry for the book!! Bill
