Ranger EEC-IV Testing

Hi all. Happy Holidays! I am dealing with terrible gas mileage after replacing fuel filter, air filter, plugs, and I am now trying to figure out what is next. I was wondering if I could pull EEC-IV codes on a 2001 4X4 XLT Ranger w/ 4.0 SOHC. Where is the test port too, couldn't find it. I just wish I cold get to the bottom of this

Early EEC-IV models have connector under the hood, but OBD-II is in cabine under the steering column.

1995+ Rangers are OBD-II (EEC-V). Which means you will need an OBD-II code reader in order to retrieve the codes. The OBD-II test port is located inside the cab, mounted at the bottom of the driver's side dash. It may have a small plastic cover over it.

Your favorite autoprts store can retrieve computer trouble codes @ no charge.
Some won't do it if the CEL isn't lit, but you can fix that by leaving the gas cap loose on the drive over there!!!! lol Any port in a storm, right!!!!

Sounds like you have a good beginning on a tune up going.

A dirty MAF sensor, especially if your using a oiled cotton gauze, or foam type air filter, lazy O2 sensor/s, excessive fuel pressure, dirty fuel injectors, messed up computer engine temp sensor, stuck open thermostat, wrong weight crank case lube & extra cold weather, heavy foot on the GO pedal, under inflated tires, yup tire pressure drops in cold weather, bet most of us have under inflated tires right now, all these things whittle away at our mpg, some more than others.

Just some more things to ponder.
Let us know how you do.

ok, so my buddy has one of those pocket scan ODBII code readers, but do those pull codes even if your cel is not lit? Here is some troubleshooting:

-Can't be tstat cuz engine temp gaugue is dead middle
-Tires are exactly even and @ right psi
-Air filter is paper and new, so MAF should be fine (no missing)

I guess I have a lot of headaches ahead before this is figured out.

your temp gauge runs off of a different sending unit (1 wire) than the computer does (2 wire).

Exactly what kind of gas mileage are you experiencing?

Are we talking like 8MPG down from 20, or like 15 MPG down from 17?
