Miles to empty Question

Does anyone know if Ford has the ability to change the value for the amount of fuel that the computer uses? When I fill up my tank it will only show 490 or so miles to empty. Obviously it does not know about the larger 52 gallon Titan tank and is still using the 28 gallon figure for a full tank. Even better is it something that can be done by Matt with a download on the SCT?

This is just thinking out loud, how would you tell the computer that it has a larger tank to start with? I'm sure anything is possible. Going from the top of my head, the biggest thing available from KTP would have been the 44 gallon that comes with the Excursion. Unless there was something bigger for the F450 & F550 models...though I doubt it.

Thanks. Yes that's along the line that I was thinking. Other trucks must have larger tanks.44 would be better than 28.

CC LWB come with 38.5 gallon tanks. That's a little better than your 28 gal. So it has to be possible to change the computer setting.

Unfortunately on the newer SD there is no way to reprogram the PCM for a larger fuel tank.

There has to be a way cause Ford uses two different size tanks in the SD's

So, you have installed a bigger tank? I want to do so as well but no one has answered the question about reprograming for a larger tank. Guess I should ask Ford. I asked SCT and they didn't even reply. I'll ask Hypertech as well

Well when FMC builds the truck and programs the PCM they choose either the 29 gallon or 38 gallon tank. There is no way for the dealer or consumer to reprogram the PCM on the newer SD for a different size fuel tank. Also a 52 gallon tank was never an option, so this is not even a choice in the PCM strategy.

I agree with bfloyd4445, there at least had to be a way in the not too distant past. My 04 owner's manual list three different fuel tank sizes...though one appears to only have been available under the Excursion (44 gallon).

When FMC changed to CAN bus protcol in the PCM starting with the 6.0 the ability for the dealer or consumer to reprogram the PCM for a different fuel tank, other than the factory tank, was removed.

If what you say is true then Ford has a way to change the tank size, and if they can do it we can. May mean changing a PROM. But does anyone even use PROM"S anymore? Think most use EPROM'S for future upgrades. I will email Ford and ask them. They are kinda slow to repond so it may be awhile before I can get back to this thread with there answer.

If you can drive to the KTP and pull in and let FMC engineers hook there computer system up to your PCM they can probably make a custom program for you, but i doubt they will bother with it. This is not a user friendly system nor does the system have the ability for the dealer or consumer to reprogram most of the parameters. It is no different than the FICM, currenty no one has the ability to reprogram the FICM, ask Matt about this, he would love to be able to rewrite the FICM. There are many things the factory has the ability to do that neither the dealer or consumer has the ability to do, some things are hard programmed into the PCM.
