We finally got everything fixed with the engine except the carb. What happens is that we turn on the truck and it turns over easily but then shuts off. It takes a while to get it going. at first if you give it gas it shuts off. It starts to putter and sound like its going to shut off. then you start to give it gas slow and all this black stuff comes out the exhaust. We do this for 10 to 15 minutes then it can run but we get no pickup at all. If we put it to the floor we get notin and it goes so slow. we have it set so it idles pretty fast but thats the only way we can keep the engine running when we drive. DO i just need to replace the carb or is it something else that i missed.
thankyou for you help.

Sounds like your exhaust is plugged up. #1 cuprit is the CATS.
Front ones let go and plug up the back one.
When you get it running put you hand over the end of the exhaust pie an have someone else rev the engine, if little or no increase in flow then your cats are plugged.
Until you can afford a NEW cat (High flow straight thru) pull exhaust off and take a rod and a hammer and knock out the catalyst in the back cat into small chunks......Start engine and let it blow out the chunks. once the cat is clear then hook up the exhaust. The engine should breathe easier.
When ya replace the cats, replace the front cats (2) with straight pipe and just go with the rear cat. Or get a muffler shop to fabricate a "Y" pipe for ya and replace the rear cat.
This could also be a choke problem. When you hit the gas above idle it forces the choke partially open. Check the choke for proper operation. Black Smoke = rich mixture. Rich mixture is caused by choke on.
...or a flooded engine. The float in the carb may need adjusting. If it is allowing to much fuel into the bowl and spilling over into the intake the engine will behave like it's flooded - another scenario for the rich mixture in turn black smoke.
