Trouble starting engine...

...been aware of this since i got the truck a few months ago but wasn't too concerned about it cause i had other issues to deal with first (and after all, it DOES start eventually...) but now the time has come and i once again am looking to you nice folks for some input.

When i first start the truck up in the morning (or any time it's been sitting for a few hours or more) the engine revs quickly, then drops back down to idle almost immediately, if i do not give it some gas by that time it will promptly die. Upon an immediate restart the engine fires up quickly and this time the revs stay high for several seconds before settling back down to a stable idle and it runs fine from there on out (put it in gear and drive away with no problems at all). However, if i give it some gas when i start it initially (and thus manage to keep it from dying) i then have to keep a fairly high amount of throttle applied (much higher than usual) when i put it in gear and let the clutch out or it will buck and stall within seconds.

Anyone had anything like this happen with their 4.9L? Any bright ideas? Any quick fixes which would be okay for a not overly mechanically inclined fellow to attempt?

My son had the exact same problem with his 1989 5.0L grand marquis. It was the IAC (idle air controller). It was beyond cleaning. After the IAC was replaced the idle problem was totally gone. On a cold engine, the idle no longer surges, dips, and stalls.

The IAC you say? anyone know what one of those should cost me? and how hard it would be to replace? (every little thing that needs to be FIXED on this darn truck just puts the mods and upgrades i want to do that much further from reality... ugh)

Call your local auto parts store for a price or if you happen to be very wealthy try your Ford dealer!

Once you physically have the part you should be able to replace it yourself. I would have done my son's but i didn't know that the problem was the IAC until i had it diagnosed at a shop. At least you have a pretty good idea of what it may be....no guarantees though.
