My 98 F150 started running rough with no check engine lite on. Changed plugs and wires and no help. Took it in and found #8 cyl. had no compression. Turned out head gasket was seeping on intake side and warped exhaust valve. At 77,000 miles I am very disappointed about a $1200 repair bill. My last 4 have been Fords but my next one will not. Have worked on this one more than the all the others.
Sorry to hear about your trouble, but these things happen to all makes. I recently had the transfer case and AC compressor fail on a Jeep Grand Cherokee, all within 6 months, to the tune of $2100.
I liked the Jeep (since sold)and although I was unhappy with the problems, I would buy another GC. If you change brands on your next truck, you have no guarantees. After 77000 miles, $1200 doesn't seem too bad to me. Good luck!!
Yeah, its true about problems can happen anywhere, anytime, to any vehicle. Ive had fords all my life and have had very little problems with any of them except my 97 Sport Explorer. At about 75,000 miles the rear started acting up. Turns out(so they told me) that the parking brake seized on and i was driving with it on all the time and didnt know it. What makes this hard to believe is that...ive never used the parking brake but once or twice, and if the parking brake was engaged id think id feel it while i was driving. ok, No more talk of Vehicle Problems...This is a Ford Site...That stuff belongs on a Chevy Board.....Kidding
Yeah, I am pretty unhappy with my 99 F-150. Just rebuilt the tranny at 50,000. Now the air compressor is out and the TPS (maybe, see previous post). The worst thing is that i have lost confidence. I don't feel good about leaving the house, and these are supposed to be tough. I would hate to see what would happen if i took it off the pavement!
naw, u got a lemon,, like mine,, but its still under warrenty and a new rebuilt engine. any engine can fail, look at the nascar guys, i know squat about engines. but ive seen my original engine, blew the first rod. maybe a oil pump failure, but the new is so much better and had them put new software in in it. tighten up the shifts. but like u i wonder, after 36k what if happens to me as to u. sucks had a nissan sentra 240k and never had do nothing to it but basic maintenance. all i know is, when im in my truck, strapped in, premium sound playing, i drive like a sho taurus. catch me......
Only using your parking brake a few times can cause it to seize when you do finally use it.
we replace the cables on are ford buses all the time cause they don't get used enough.
before we put the cables on we apply some anti-seize on the cables to help prevent seizing.
It's all related to the law of averages. I have a '92 explorer...worst vehicle i've ever owned....bought it new and need it to go 15 years based on the price I paid. So what do I do? Bought a '99 F150...best vehicle I've ever owned. 81,000 miles and just a
battery and a set of tires!
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I`ve owned 2 `97 F-150s.
First I bought in March of 1996. A Lariat loaded, year and half later w/36k on it I traded for a new `97 4x4 OffRoad. Today that 4x4 has over 104k on it. I`ve had the tranny power flushed twice, replaced front pads, change coolant, change oil every 5k or less, one headlight lamp, one tail-light lamp and this week will be changing the plugs for the first time.
The plugs are a B*%@*. Then went out and got the Snap-On boot plug pliers, had the first 2 off in 5 minutes, before they wouldnt move.
So now I`ll tackle the rest when it warms up a bit later in the week.
Love my truck and still get comments on how clean it is.
Maybe I`m lucky, maybe cuz it was made in Kansas, maybe because its a Ford, whatever the reason I`m really pleased with its performance.
Ive had a 76 3/4 ton Chevy that I beat terribly for 97k miles with no problem and a 79 3/4 ton Chevy for 75k miles, the cam went out at 5k miles. Had a 83 Ranger 4x4 that I abused for 264K miles (yes I said 264,000 miles)and only consumed 3 manual transmissions. Went to a 93 Ranger 4x4 that my kids took over at 125K miles and the only problem it had was the clutch slave cylinder went at 90K miles. Bought a 2001 F150/7700 and the thing vibrated like a paint shaker. Ford bought it back. I replaced it with a 2002 F150/7700 which has been great through 5K miles now and I love it. I feel if you take care of them most anything will last and there are some lemons. Although I can't bring myself to try a Dodge....
I sbould be picking up a new 2002 F150/7700 Tuesday. It has some options that I did not want like power driver's seat and electric 4x4 shift, but the 7700's are not very abundant here in MA. Any need to worry about the electric shifts in the 2002's?
I'm excited about this Ford coming from a small 4x4 Toyota!
Glad to hear that you enjoy yours. Good luck to you.
