LAST EDITED ON 07-Feb-01 AT 09:19 PM (EST)[p]what are you guys getting for gas mileage on your trucks?I purchased a 92 F150 2wd 5 speed with 2.73 rear and the 4.9L.I cant seem to get over 12 or 13 miles per gallon no matter how i drive it.The guy i bought it from told me that it gets 17 to 19.I just did a full tune up except the fuel filter and i also set the timing to factory specs.I am very disappointed with the mileage seeing that i drive it about 450 miles per week.Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.thanks
I have a 92 4x4 and get an average of about 17 mpg. I have gotten as high as 20 mpg but that was a fluke. Mine is stock except for a K&N filter kit which did not make a noticable difference in the milage. My milage dropped at about 75K miles when the fan clutch started locking up and also decreases signifacantly when the winter fuels come out.
I drive a 1984 F150 with a 300I6, 3 on-the-tree and carburated. I get 14MPG. Before it got cold out it was around 17MPG. Probably not a great comparison.

I HAVE A DIESEL POWERSTROKE AND I KNOW THAT IN THE WINTER I GET LESS MILEAGE BECAUSE OF THE WINTER BLEND FUEL BUT I DIDNT THINK THAT GASOLINE WAS AFFECTED TOO.I HAVE NEVER NOTICED ANY DIFFERENCE IN ANY OF MY OTHER GAS VEHICLES.
I used to have a 4.9 in my truck. I also got about the same mileage you are getting. I tried everything! New plugs, all new sensors, different fuel additives, and other stuff. Even a new exhaust sytem from the engine back didn't help my truck. And I'm talking about a new high flow cat too! After spending over $1,000 in two years trying to get it to run right. I finally swapped the engine out. Now I get around 14-16 in most cases.

Check your timing. Check the coil, distributor, cap, plugs and plug wires. Check your air filter, fuel filter, and fuel pressure. Learn how to run the KOEO diagnostic test at http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html
Read the codes you get and repair or replace any questionable sensors (O2, ECT, ACT, EGR, etc.)
This should help improve the way your engine runs and mpg. Once you've done this, consider a set of side-gapped plugs. Run a search at this site and you'll all the info you need on this. I posted earlier on this forum (MPG and Performance) about what I've done in the past year to my used 90 F150 SC with 4.9L six. That post, a couple of weeks ago, may give you some ideas. If your truck is in good shape, there's no reason to live with less than 15 mpg in the 300-I6. That's always my bottom line mpg. If you do a little work, you can probably achieve that or even some better.
I usually average around 17 mpg in the summer, but when it turns cold it goes down to 13-14 due to winter fuel, lots of idling, etc. BTW, this is with 3.08 gears and no OD.
12-14 mpg is pretty standard. That's what i'm getting on my 90 with 5 speed and 3.08 gears.I do keep up with the maintenance. I don't buy these reports of 17-20 mpg. If it costs you a grand to pick up a few mpg's, what are you really saving?
Hello. Well I would say I have you beat. I would love to get 13 or 14 mpg. I get 5 around town and 10 on the highway. I did a full tuneup, sidegapped plugs, new carburator, egr valve, oxygen sensor, set timing and rich/lean mixture. My truck idles smooth and has alot of power and torque, but gets 50 miles to 10 dollars of gas. Im thinking of replaceing the fuel pump next. Im ready to go crazy if I can't get this thing figured out. Good luck. Try a full tuneup in your case. Greg.

I currently have a '91 F250 4x4, 4.9, ZF 5 sp, 355 gearing, P215-75-16's, 150,000 miles and have never gotten worst than 12mpg. Average about 14mpg. Best was first week I owned it and got 17mpg. Went down after I put running boards and topper on it. Topper is pretty smooth and I don't see why it should hurt. Also had a bug shield on the front. Not the flat fronted one, more contoured and it cost me 1 to 2 mpg.
Had a '88 2 wheel drive, Mazda 5 sp, 308 gearing, P235-75-15's, Averaged 16mpg, best was 18mpg.
Had a '77 4.9 engine in a '67 F100 2 wheel drive with a 3 speed and used the intake and exhaust off the 240. 1 Barrel carb. 31-11.50-15's on the rear. Stock gearing, what ever it was. 18mpg and best was 20mpg.
Have a friend with a E150 van, about an '85 with a 5sp tranny and he never got worst than 20mpg delivering plants all over the state. Frequently got better mpg even when loaded down. Put several hundred thousand miles on it too.
Has anyone thought of adding a soft/hard tonneau cover to the bed of their truck? It's an easy way to pick up some MPG savings ... adds to the look of some trucks (hey, they don't look good on all of 'em!) ... and keeps rain/snow out of the back. Short of that, you can pick up some mpg with one of those aftermarket flow-through tailgates ... although I don't care for the look of them on ANY truck. An open bed is a BIG fuel economy barrier.
I'd buy one if there was a company that would make one to use with a headache rack. But nobody makes one. So, I was going to custom make one myself out of Diamond Plate aluminum. Looked too expensive, so no tonneau.
