My '04 Edge with 4.0 and five speed has a grinding noise in second and fourth. Been there almost since new. Took it to the dealer under warranty, was told it was "normal." Now out of warranty [44 months old, 34,000 miles] and it's becoming more noticeable, particularly coasting in second gear with the clutch out with the wheels turning the gears.
Any TSB's on this?
Should I get an extended warranty?
Any educated guesses on what's the problem?
Ok. The problem of M5OD is that this is light duty thranny and it was designed for 1.6-2.5 engines, but later it was "enforced" and now it is used with 3.0 and 4.0. Yeah, box is tought now, but bearings and gears are overloaded and that's why this tranny is noisy.
Noise of tranny may be sign of problem and may be not. SOmetimes it dessapeares, sometimes it's going notisable. Noise in 2nd gear may be caused by bearings ore teeth surface. It is only 1 way to be sure... drop the tranny, remove cover and inspect gears surface, check for shafts play, inspect synchros and carefully look at color of oil, is there facing there? Sometimes early fixed problem saves more money..... Well, M5OD is a simple tranny, I say primitive one, but eay to fix by DIYers. Repare manual is availible in internet.
"particularly coasting in second gear with the clutch out with the wheels turning the gears." This is not a standard operating condition. If I understand what you are doing correctly, I would say that you are putting a load on the usually unloaded side of the gear. That might be the source of your noise.
I have a 2001 Edge 4.0L 5sp Manual 78,000 mi with no issues due to grinding noise, except when I miss a shift. Hehehehe.
does it make the noise if your engine braking? Tranny should handel loads either way. If not, a lot of people would have useless trucks by now. If it only makes noise while under a nuteral load, then it is most likely the syncros acting up. Not a major deal now, but when have your self locked out of second/fourth your gonna be mad. Those two gears opperate in unison. Do you have documentation of when you first reported the problem to the dealer?
They've been using the M5OD for a long time now, even the F-150 uses a version of it. The biggest problem reported with this trans, is the shift rail plugs in the top. there rubber and after they get old, they deteriorate and let the oil escape. If the tranny runs dry, then she's shot of course. This sis a problem associated with older high mileage rangers. Some people replace the plugs with the stockers, other use silicon and others get brass plugs from a tranny shop. Your truck is too new for this, but you might want to check the fluid level.
