Could it be the exhaust manifold studs are broken? It only lasts about 3-4 seconds, and it's definitely not your standard lifter tapping noise. I noticed there was a TSB related to this-do I have any recourse with the dealer? It's out of warranty, got 48,000 miles.
Have you checked your exhaust studs for any missing or broken off nuts? The back right on the passenger side is frequently a problem. The other issue is you might have lifters that are bleeding down. Does it do it on cold startup only in the morning or does it do it every time when hot? What oil are you useing-you might try a slightly heavier mix and make sure you have a filter with a good anti-drainback valve in place.
I have heard stories about people doing their own oil changes or going to those speedy places where they use cheap oil. My van calls for a ford Synthetic oil. I had a problem with my 99 Suburban doing the same thing. went to those speedy places and they used what ever oil they wanted along with cheap filters. ended up trading it in for the van after I got engine knockin on cold start ups.
