Hey guys just wondering what kind of ballpark price i should be looking for if i would take my truck to the dealer for some plugs and wires. Thanks in advance!!!
I went and had mine done at Omeara Ford in Denver, CO and it cost me $185.00. If they would have broke one it would have been $25 a plug extra. They took there time and kept my truck all day and ended up not breaking a single plug. After tax and oil change my bill was just a little over $200.
BrianFX4, that is the best price I've seen, and I've talked to several dealers in my area, and $400 is what they're charging, + the cost of a broken plug removal.....
I can just imagine some moron with a impact taking my plugs off with no lubrication, and breaking 7-8 plugs, and me getting ripped OFF!
MNNFord,
Yeah after reading all the threads here I was almost to scared to call them, when he quoted me the price I asked him 2 or 3 times if he was sure. Omeara is a great dealership and I have all my work done there and will continue to have my work done there.

I like the thread where the guy says his best shop mechanic just went straight at it with no lubricant or heat in the motor on 5.4 3valve at I think it was 65k and came back to him in no time with old plugs in hand and new ones installed no problem....?? I am respectfully sceptical to this one lol
I heard something yesterday from "a guy who's friend is a Ford mechanic," so I am not sure if I believe it.
FTE is where the good info is so I am posting here.
Here is what I have heard (I am in The Pas, Manitoba, Canada):
Ford mechanics are quoting between $300 and $3000 to change spark plugs on the '05s and newer that have the 5.4L with over 50,000KM (±31,000miles). This is because any of those engines beyond that mileage point are highly likely to have frozen plugs that will break when removal is attempted.
In order to remove the broken plug(s) from the rear of the engine, the cab has to come off, hence the $3,000 figure.
Has anyone else heard this?
I am NOT trying to pass along "scare" info, but instead am just trying to find out if there is any truth to what I have heard.
That's TOTAL BS!!!!!! My '04 had over 65K on it when I had mine done. As you can see on my above posts it may have taken all day but all of them came out. I talked to the mechanic who actually did my plugs and he said that they now have an extraction tool that they use if a plug breaks that makes the job WAY easier. The place I went charges $25 a plug if they break one...no cab removal.

LOL ... I kind of wondered how much of what I heard was BS.
That's why I wanted to ask here on the FTE forums to find out the real truth.
Takeing off the cab would give you better axcess to the plugs, but what the hel! would you do it for?
It cost $1,000 to remove the heads. They could just go straight to removing the heads without attempting to undo the plugs, and it'd be $2,000 cheaper than removing the cab.
I'm still hearing stories of some Ford Dealers telling customers to wait since the plugs last 100k miles. Its my opinion that it all boils down to warranties and service contracts.

That was me that went through that. I wish i could've taken pics, but unfortunately I was working. The mileage was 43k (kilometers) so the plugs werent too bad yet. I watched him take this first one out and then left. No problems, no broken plugs, engine slightly warmed, not stone cold. No sea-foam used, everything worked well. Just my experience. (and an awesome technician)
I am still of the belief that not everyone has issues with these plugs, but reading all the forums posted here you'd think it was 90% or higher.
BTW, 400.00 for a platinum tune up is not out of the ordinary for any vehicle. Slightly high, but not out of the ball park. I'll have to check the book to see what actual time is on replacing them and let you guys know.
