Why do so many people want to change their plugs when they are good for 100,000 miles?

The theory is that change them early and pay 400.00, or change them later and risk paying 3000.00 to have the heads taken off and re-tapped, or worse, replaced. Myself, I changed them early and am thankful. Once again, this is theory with some pretty extreme cases listed like Kevin's.

I changed mine at around 65k as per dealer recommendation. They said they are seeing the most problems with them sticking and breaking after 70K.

I changed mine myself at 110,000 miles. (2005, 5.4L) I asked the dealer for a quote and the service tech said $400 for plugs only. If I wanted new boots on the COPs, it would be more. If anything were to break, that would add to the cost.

I decided to buy the plugs myself, some penetrating oil, the anti-seize, the boots, and the dielectric grease. Took my time, followed the TSB almost to the letter , and had the whole job done in about 3.5 hours. Total out of pocket was about $165. I admit I was nervous as heck about breaking off a plug. Even thought that #7 had broken but my socket had only slipped off the plug. After changing my drawers on that one, the job went fairly smoothly. The only part I removed for access was the PCM and its mouting bracket. Nothing else.
