I'm have a hard time finding a 460 an a c6. came across a 390. an a 289. as well as a 1990 351.
But after looking at the old pics of my 53 with a inline six an three on the tree. I'm thinking a may go that way agin but with a 300 an a three speed
any thoughts
this has been debated many times here and although im a v=8 guy all i can say is that i've owned several 300 sixes and they are fine motors . have never had one modified , but i had one that had 373000 plus on it , an 83 f-150 , that i gave to my lil' brother who in turn sold it to a kid in riverton and it's as far as i know still clanging down the road . so if ya wanna six go with it if you were closer i got a cuz with another 53 that has a running 460 sitting around ................... why not the 390 ? would have plenty 'o' grunt and the nostalgia factor too .
The 300 is a great engine, no reason you shouldn't use one. If you plan on driving the truck a lot it will sure cost less to operate than a 390 or 460.
i think if'n i can remember right, the 300 shares the same bellhousing pattern as the 302 and 351 w. seeing as they were in use up till the restyle in what 96 or 97 you can get you an aod tranny , heck buy a whole truck and , late model of course get the six ,anaod , and fuel injection to boot .
With a 96 or 97 I'm pretty sure you'd get an EAOD automatic. The AOD was replaced in cars in 94, but I'm not sure when the switch over was made in trucks. If you can deal with the computer controls the EAOD can be a lot more flexible for shift points and some people say they are a better gearbox. There's a couple of companies out there making aftermarket ECUs for them. I was going to put one behind my 351C, but a cheap, hardly used AOD came up on craigslist and I couldn't pass it up. Now all I have to do is finish the darn '56 project!
I've had some experiences with the 300 six over the years. I like them, I think they are a great engine. I've had several work trucks, one had a three speed the other was a 4 speed. That 300 six with the 4speed was a heck of a truck.
I'm not sure what automatic trans bolts to it but I think a 4spd auto and a 300 six would be a great package for your 53.
i thought about what engine to use for awhile myself, and decided to go with a 300..... also i just like being alittle different, i'm planning a mild porting/valve job, i hope to get alittle extra horsepower with the super smooth 300 idle (i'm planning to use the stock camshaft)

here's mine.........
Thats a sweet looking motor, Which exhaust manifold?
I have one set aside for my Speedster if I can't find a Straight Eight. What ever I use will have a blower sitting in front of the engine.
I have a 300 6 and C6 automatic (with np203tcase) in my 79 Bronco. A highway vehicle it is not. Find an AOD, you don't want high rpms while cruising down the highway. Length may be an issue.
