The best time to change the oil is after the truck has been sitting over night without starting it. IF you do it this way, there will be very little oil spilt.
But if it was started recently, then if you give it a few turns, it will give a steady stream straight down, might hit the diff a little, but it does not drain directly on to it. Then finish taking it off and pull it to front, and slip it out.
If you still have the filter from the factory, expect it to be on tighther than you'd ever imagine. If you search for something like "+remove +oil +filter", you'll see all the posts about it. I had luck with the end wrench that exactly matched the filter flats and a bunch of extensions to get in front of the bumper, but others have been able to do it with a strap wrench and some arm contortion.
Someone the other day mentioned putting a plastic bag over the filter while removing it so the oil goes in the bag instead of elsewhere.

i have never liked changing cold oil..... i always do it while warm so it flows better......
After installing a CAI, the filter was much easier to get to, and I have always changed warm oil. I have an idea on dealing with this messy oil filter deal (especially the horizontally mounted ones). Have a little experimenting to do.
My 05 has skid plates. On top of the skid plate is a platsic drip pan that runs from directly under the oil filter to the edge of the skid plate. During an oil filter change, this drip pan catches spilled oil from the filter and routes it to the edge of the skid plate where it then flows into my black waste oil tub. When I change oil, I simply line the plastic drip pan with tin foil and change the filter. Once done, I throw the tin foil away. No mess.
