Synthetic oil

After how many miles is it OK to switch to Royal Purple synthetic oil?

Also is running synthetic oil OK to use with E85 fuel?

Some will say that you should wait 3 - 5K miles to let the engine seal up properly. However, I put syn in mine at about 100 miles.

Syn and E85 are fine. The oil system and the fuel system don't mix...if they do you've got bigger problems than deciding which oil to use.

My co-worker said his new 07 Nissan Titan has a different oil change interval for the E85 engine. FYI

If you run E85 more than %50 of the time the maintenance schedule says to change the oil every 3000 miles rather than 5000. However, running synthetic I only change the oil after assessing the oil condition...I look at it and if it looks real dirty I change it.

Good question. ETOH is a better solvent and is readily miscible with water. Not sure why they want more oil changes...

Ethanol is very harsh on engines and the oiling systems. Running E85 causes the oil to rapidy shear and drop the TBN and use up all the acid neutralizers in a very short time frame. Try talking to Paul or Jeff in the engineering dept at royal purple. They will also tell you to do oil sampling and judge how bad the fuel contamination rate is before going over 3,000 miles on E85.

This is from a manufacturer of E85 conversion kits.
http://www.fullflexint.com/pages/tips.htm

Scroll down to Bold heading #5 ("Do I need to run special oil or change it more frequently?") and read the 1st paragraph.

I used alot of diffrent synthetics over the years. I first used synthetics in my new 1989 ford f-150 it was synergyn racing oil. that motor was a 5.0 and had 225,000 on it when i sold it in 1995 it always got me 15+ mpg loaded as it was a work truck and believe me the oil got changed between 7and 10,000 miles depending on how busy we were. Im sold on synthetics ask any performance engine builder they use them too even the old school guys. I have a 04 fx4 5.4 3v now and I did keep the original oil in it till about 1000 miles. been castrol syntec ever since and I dont notice any ticking diesel noises others describe she has 47k on it now my gas milage is only calculated figures at fill ups. gets about 16-18 regularly on regular (I tried the expensive stuff did not notice any difference with economy or performance). My wife has a 1998 eddie baurer explorer we bought it used it has the onboard ifo center with regular oil when we first got it we got 18 mpg. switched to synthetics and picked up 2.5 mpg. some guys say no difference in oils when changed at recommended change . I like the added peace of mind just my 2 cents thanks
