Over the weekend, the fan came off of the water pump in my 94 Bronco - again. This happened to me last summer, going down the freeway. The fan came off, taking the mounting bracket with it off of the water pump shaft, and embedded itself in the radiator.
Since the same thing happened again, I'm curious - I assume that I need to replace the water pump again, since there's nothing to mount the fan to. Did I just get a bad pump? Or, is there a way to reattach the mounting bracket back onto the pump, and save some cash?
Also, what could cause this to happen twice? I'd never done any work to the fan the first time it happened, so I don't think that it's anything that I've done. But I have been wrong before...
Wow! twice. Thats like getting hit by lightening. I would look at all your pullys. I would be skeptical that some pully or the fan was worped and causing this to happen. Deffinetly buy a new waterpump. start it up and compare all your pullys and the operation of your fan to other vehicals. If any of them look funny, I would replace.
Did the fan get bent the first time? Are you saying the fan clutch is coming off? I did have a brand new fan clutch go bad after a few hundred miles on a GMC motorhome.
Yeah, both times the fan got trashed - bent all out of shape. At least this time, it hit the radiator and fan shround, and stopped instead of bouncing around, taking every hose with it like last time. As far as I can tell, all of my hoses and wiring are good this time.
The clutch is still attached to the fan, so it's still holding pretty good - to the fan. I've been thinking about going electric with the fan, so maybe I'll just go that route this time.
I've had alot of problems with the electric fans on mine. You can see in one of my earlier threds. But, dont let that stop you, I still think the idea is sound. Some people on here have had no problems. It has some good points for sure.
Has the earmarks of a damaged fan. A warped or bent fan will be out of balance and can wobble as it spins. The vibrations generated by this condition could easily cause the mounting flange to walk off the waterpump output shaft. Id look into a replacement fan. The electric route is viable too, just requires a bit more modification than replacement.
i have seen the surp belt put on the wrong way and this loosens the fan if put on the right way it should not come loose look for correct routing of the sep belt thats why some are left hand thread and some are right hand thread
