Recently, my truck developed a slight hesitation when it would shift, kinda like it wasn't sure that it wanted to be in that particular gear. Then today, is started to backfire once in a while. I checked the tranny fluid and it's full enough, but has bubbles in it, not completely foamy but bubbles none the less. Any suggestions?
Backfire is normally some sort of timing issue. Either mechanical (like timing gear/belt slipped a tooth), or electrical - (cracked distributer cap, bad module...) I am sure there are allot more smarts on the subject then what I carry around in my noggin..
I would be willing to bet it is timing as well. Put a timing light to it and see what you come up with. Timing would also explain the hesitation by not igniting the fuel at the right time or even not igniting it at all. You coluld always start off with the easy plugs/wires/cap/rotor tune up and see it that takes care of your issue.
I had a 95 cougar with the 4.6 mod motor and new plugs and wires fixed the problem for it. They seem to be sensitive to needing good plug wires. If you change plugs, don't forget the anti-seize. It was a pain to change plugs and wires, and I imagine the trucks with the 5.4 is worse.
