Smoke, and Stumble

Hey guys, when I was getting my truck inspected yesterday (it passed with flying colors, and I got a couple of compliments:-) ) I noticed that it let out a plume of black smoke when the guy started it. It doesn't smoke when I start it though. Maybe it didn't like him driving it? LOL It hasn't done it since.

This next problem happens everytime I drive it! While the engine is hot, if you go to restart it after shutting it down, it will stumble a little bit. No smoke is visible. My tach says that it's stumbling around 350-400 RPM. The only way to cure it, is to bring it up to about 600-700 RPM for a few seconds. Only then will it idle at the 600 RPM's that I have it adjusted to.

Oh yeah, and just for kicks, I ran some 100LL avgas through my truck last monday, and boy what a difference!! I asked one of the guys at work what the mixture should be, and he said 2 gallons 100LL to every 10 gallons of normal gas. He said that the best combo would be that listed above, using supreme gas...93? I think. Oh well, it works well with good ol' 87. The best part is that I get it for free (without stealing). Heck even with my discount, it's only $1.40 a gallon.

Hmm, was the engine warm when he started it? If so, maybe he gave it a shot of gas when he went to start it. Hmm, my truck does the same thing on a hot re-start, if I don't get on the gas right away, it'll stall though. And, it doesn't like to idle until it's warm, but that may have something with that poor 1bbl trying to feed a very deep breathing 300....... Dang EFI won't work with my cam, and I can't find out what is wrong..... And, I'm back to flyin in style w/2wd(hey, if the front wheels leave the ground, it's not my fault) while I rebuild the front end, just got my T-case back from being rebuilt Saturday....
Chris, check this out [link:www3.ns.sympatico.ca/mtflemm.mac/fordpage/wavs/cammed.mp3|this] is what the Beast idles like now :-) Doesn't sound that sixish does it? I'm working on adapting a GM efi system to my truck, most of them are fully cracked and easily tuned, if I can't get one to work, I'll be investing in a 4bbl setup....
Once I get the fuel system straightened out, I'm going to have it painted, take a guess what the colour scheme is gonna be......

MAN! That truck sounds good! That'll show those SBC guys... :-) Was that taken with the true dual exhaust and glasspacks, or was it when it only had the single exhaust pipe? I'm just curious, but with the four barrel on it, how high was too high when it came to RPM's? It sounds like my truck is starving for gas, and is about to blow up at about 3800. With your engine, what is the equivelant to my 3800? 5500-6ish?

C'mon copycat.... oh well, i'll let you copy my paint scheme, if you'll lemme copy your engine?

Deal?

Can you make me a couple of less distorted soundclips so I can take 'em into work? Maybe a couple of redline revs LOL ;-)

Goodluck!

Take it easy...

That's with it off at the collectors :-) And, it's only with the stock 8.4:1 compression too. 4bbl?? I had EFI Chris... It never starved, but the stock cam starts running out of breath around 3800, that might be your problem, but your engine has lots of miles on it right? Be carefull you don't blow it up. Even with the 1bbl feeding mine, it still wants to keep pulling at 6000, but I haven't pushed it past that.

Sure, it's a deal, I want that paint scheme anyway, and my engine isn't all that special....

I'll see if I can make some better soundclips, but as to the redline, I have no clue what that'd be ;-) Try [link:www3.ns.sympatico.ca/mtflemm.mac/fordpage/wavs/cammedrev.mp3]this[/link] if you want to hear it revving, I opened it up to 5500 or so... Unfortunatley, there's a bit of wind interference in both of those files(yes, that was recorded outside, about 50 feet from the truck.)

I think some of my neighbors hate me now, when I took it out for a test run after the cam break in, I went sans hood & grille, and when I went to turn around, my clutch linkage came apart(engine mounts weren't tight enough,) and I was stuck in second trying to pull a U-turn, so I just walked on it, and the truck went good and sideways... I had the 2.75's back in it because I blew a seal in the ARB, and I held second to 55 mph(5500) and amazingly, this big 'ol truck tranny will upshift without the clutch....

Man you're a nut. :-) Did you try to post those sound clips? I can't believe that I forgot that you had MAF EFI lol, my mistake.

Hopefully the neighbors you got angry were Chevy people lol...

Don't tell me you mounted those nice tires on the ol' white spokes? I'll have to kill you if you actually reused those! I'm replacing mine this weekend, with some nice looking aluminum series 55 rims (look at your Summit catalog), and brand new BFG Mud or Allterrains, depends on the $$$.

Too bad I have to use the stupid 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern.

Have fun!

Yup, I did, but my html got chewed up and spit out, the file I was trying to link to is at www3.ns.sympatico.ca/mtflemm.mac/fordpage/wavs/cammedrev.mp3

Actually, most of them see no point in modifying a vehicle, one of them even thinks that headers will make your rig harder on gas... And, most of them are Chevy people to boot.

Yup, they're on the whitespokes, which to my suprise aren't as old as I thought, they were built in '96. I'm going to paint them black, but, they will be replaced when I have the money. I'm thinking something along the line of Eagle Alloys 559's. I don't have my Summit catalog handy who's series 55's are you talking about? I was gonna get some BFG A/T's, but I got the Discoverers for $50 a piece, there's only 1000 miles on them, and they still had that blue crap on the white letters...

Hmm, your truck has 5 on 4.5? What GVW package does it have? Mine has the 4750# package, and I've got the 5 on 5.5. One thing you have going for you with the small pattern is that many RWD cars use the same one, so you'll have lots of wheels to choose from....

>Have fun!

You bet I will

I swear we're going to have matching trucks when we're done! lol I meant to put 559 not 55. Just like you said, they're made be Eagle Alloys.

Atleast I know you've got good taste in rims..... lol

Almost forgot, your truck sounded great in the sound clip! I'm not sure what my GVW rating is, but I know it's LOOOOOOW! You can literally breathe on the back bumper and it sags back. The only good thing about it, is it makes 15 bags of cement look like a real load, really surprises the Chovie guys. Especially when I beat them off the line, with the spare tire about to touch LOL... poor fools......

Have a good one...

Thanks, I think it sounds pretty good too, but it's too loud....

My truck was like taht with the stock springs in it, I've got springs out of a 5900 GVW F150 LWB in it now.... And what makes things scary is the fact that this thing had a rather well used trailer hitch on it when I got it, and it was bolted to the bumper, needless to say, I've replaced it with a 2" reciever hitch.

The 5.0 Mustang guys get pretty pissed off when I shut 'em down with something with 10" of clearance... And, if I have something on in the box that they can see they get real pissed off.... I beat a guy off of the line today with the tractor on the trailer, he had a dropped and riced 85 F150 with a built 351W(I did the header and cam install in it, I might dispise ricers, but money is money) and he got pissed off big time,He did beat me, but I could tell he was pissed that I took him off the line. I can't help it if he's a wanna be ricer who doesn't know how to drive...

LOL that is a good one, here's one that happened to me Monday. A buddy if mine at work has an '81 Chevy SWB. He's got it lowered so the top of his front bumper is a little but above the bottom of my front bumper. I'll admit it, his truck is pretty tricked out, he's got about a 450 HP 350 in it.

Anyhoo we had parked perfectly across from eachother with about 100 feet between us. I glanced up just as he stopped a foot and a half infront of my grill. Ofcourse I could see him giggling. (dirty #$%%$@# :-)) I kinda freaked out for a second there... lol Well he gets the notion to tap bumpers, so he pulls up real slow, and nudges me a little bit. I was starting to get sick of the taunts, so I dumped the clutch and sent my driver side XLT bumperette through his billet grill. Since my front bumper slid on top of his, it hooked under the top of his grill. Boy that was fun, crunching that thing trying to get the trucks seperated. There wasn't even a scratch on my bumper. The only "damage" that my truck "suffered" was a loosened up bumperette. It took 3 minutes to fix, including the time it took me to go to the tool box inside the hangar.

I think the 80-86 XLT front bumper is the best style Ford ever produced. Mine is in mint condition, only paid 35 bucks for it, not a scratch!

Chevy crunchin' is fuuuuuuuun.....
