I was told by a friend that if I get a locker for my truck that it would make it so that the truck is no longer a one leger and that both rear wheels would be the drive wheel. Is this so and if it is has anyone done this and how much was it?
You are going to have to supply more info. Current answer is yes your friend is kinda right. Both wheels grabbing gives you more traction. What kinda rearend end do you have? Motor? etc. Why do you need both rear tires grabbing? Not trying to be smart here, just that you would get a lot more response if you gave full info. Just my 2 cents.
My engine is the I6 300 (89 F-150), it is pretty standard at this point with future upgrades down the line i.e. new cat, headers, carb, high flow air filter, etc. It is a stock rear end, 4 speed manual with 1st being a granny. I want both to wheels to drive for the main reasons anyone would want them; traction, acceleration, pulling ability, yada yada. If anyone has had this done one a 2 wheel, info on the cost and what has been noticed in improvements and faults, if any. THANX
Lockers start out at about $400 for the quality ones. I opted for a limited slip as it still allows the wheels to act individually during cornering and saves on tire wear. I got a Auburn Pro-Series Limited Slip, which has a stronger clutch pack in it that more firmly locks the axles compaired to a standard limited slip. At $390, it was more than worth the price as it's probably the best mod I've made to my truck to date.
Another option is a mini-spool which usually runs about $200, but you'll also need to buy a C-Clip Eliminator Kit for $180 which puts you back into the same price range. I wouldn't recommend this as spools FULLY lock the axles together, and are intended for race vehicles only.
Lastly, check around at local shops to see what they're going to charge you to install it. I got quotes ranging from $150-$400 so it really varies.
Honestly, you're not going to see much improvement in handling/accelleration. The main purpose of a locker is to improve traction off-road.
For handling you're going to have to modify the suspension system. You didn't state whether you were looking for better on or off-road handling, so I can't really give you any suggestions. For accelleration, you're going to have to look at your gear ratio's and engine output.
