my rear brakes are locking up after it rains or is humid. i have to hit them and release them several times. this is only in damp weather. new rear brakes one year ago (23,000 ish miles ago). never powerbraked since then unless my bro did it (wouldnt suprise me) any ideas?
They're getting water in there somehow. Are you sure it's the rears? My wife's 98 Ranger front brakes used to get super grabby in the rain/wet weather.
I had the same problem on my '97 250 diesel. I changed out the valve that goes from the vacuum manifold to the Brake booster. It's like $10 or less I think at NAPA? I forget what the actual name of the part is or part number. That worked for me.

Hope this helps!

Before you change the Check valve for the brake booster see if you need it. It holds vacuum in the booster after the engine has been shut down. Wait a few hours or over night. Before you start the engine push on the break pedal, if it feels normal the check valve is OK if the pedal is hard as a brick the valve is leaking. I don't think this would be the cause of the brakes sticking though. Just a heads up.
If the brakes only do this when it's damp outside then the brake shoes themselves are the problem IMO. It's a common problem with some brake shoes, usually the cheap ones made from Organic friction material, but goes away after you use the brakes a couple time. The heat dries them out pretty fast. A leaking axle seal can cause this too. You need to pull the brake drums and give it a look-see.
well i am going to be putting new pads and rotors on the front of my truck... and on the back i am gonna put new drums and shoes... and just maybe i will convert the back to a disc brake setup idk yet... and i am gonna put ceramic shoes on it and drilled and slotted rotors on it... anybody got anything to say about this???
lol... yeas i think it would be good but idk if i should or not... when i pull stuff i pull very heavy loads and it is a daily driver so i want to see what you all think first...
I am running Napa's Ceramix on the front of my truck. Seem fine. I do have a squeal though but not sure if it the frotn or rear. Also if you have thinking about rear disc at all and you need rear brakes. Go disc if you can swing the extra cash! they are awesome!! I was a bit worried about winters roads with them but so far they have been great!
