Installing a lift pump?

O.K., after looking elsewhere, I pulled the 'new' pump. Clearly, I got it on wrong! I can see wear on the front side of the lever where it ought to be hitting the cam. The lever is bent noticeably rearward so was probably riding the side of the lobe. I've tried several lights, & my mirror, to see in there and can't see crap! Should I feel any resistance against the lever-if the cam is right-when I put the pump in? Or, should it mate up smoothly?

Last time I did mine there was some resistance......the main point is the pump flange must be flat to the block before bolts installed...... If you have to pull the flange flat on one side with the bolts that would mean a problem possibly.....

I may be time to invest in an electric...... and move on.

Installing the pump is about as difficult as any engine I've ever worked on! Just did one on my boat-a 460 Ford-and thought that was difficult. Had the wife 'bump' the engine over and slid the pump in until I felt the least amount of resistance against the lever. What I did, finally, that made it so much easier: I put a 3/8th X 2 stud in the rear hole. I could slide the pump just on the stud, keeping it angled down slightly, then starting the front bolt. It goes straight in that way. That kept it from twisting against the tension which it seems to always want to do. Gee, my truck sure sounds good running!
