I have a '97 7.3 CC 4x4 . The other morning when Igot in the brake pedal was froze up. Don't have much brake at all, pedal very stiff. It has done it twice on me, but only when very cold. After it warms up inside cab it's o.k. Ihave replaced brakes all the way around, vacuum pump, and brake booster, all within last 5000 mi. and it just started doing it when cold. Any ideas? Thanks, Scott in Ks.
Vacuum leak may cause this and is easy to determine. When the pedal is stiff try to get air to blow from the vents in the HVAC system. If it's stuck on defrost...you have a vacuum leak.
If you are driving it in cold and wet weather and not keeping it inside then your parking brake cable or brake drums may be freezing solid. It's happened a lot in the past to these things. I never use my park brake when it's below freezing.
Your fluid could be contaminated too. Just a little bit of water in it will cause problems when it's real cold out.
I've had the same problem. A couple of times when it is real cold i get a real hard pedal. It happened to me in June of 2006 the first time and I was sitting in a truck stop and replaced the master cylinder, the brake booster and the Vaccuum pump. I figure they are all pretty new so the only other thing is the vacuum block/valve. The couple of times it did it in the cold, I put a torpedo heater under the truck and a 100 watt light bulb by the vacuum block and it took about 20 minute to get pedal. My boy just had the truck in single digit temps this weekend and it did it again. he said it took about 30 seconds to get pedal. I said what do you mean 30 seconds? He said I prut a torch on the brake booster and had someone push on the pedal. I about had a heart attack when he said he put a torch on the brake booster. So what do y'all think? Booster or vacuum block or both?
