Replacing auto shifter

I'm about to replace my shifter finally. I've had the part for 4-5 months. I just noticed on the instructions it says to "install a new transmission range selector pin whenever it is removed." Is this really necessary? I don't have a new one handy.

I replaced my shifter, but the shaft is worn. Has anyone replaced the shaft? If so, how hard of a job is that?

It was easy enough to replace, but now my key doesn't have to be in the ignition to start the truck! LOL I might have messed something up when I pulled the flange thing off. I'm not real good at following instructions, I guess.
