boared out 300
I don't know if this is what you are talking about bu I had one bored out .030. so now techically I am running a 6-cylinder 302.
as for the price... I paid about $600 for the whole nine yards.
that is cleaning and boring the block
new cam bearings
new camshaft
new pistons
press work for putting new pistons on rods
grinding the crank
new main bearings
new rod bearings
new rings
new pushrods
and a complete gasket set
basically everything exept assembling it for me

so it cost you around 600 for the parts and procedures but you dis/reassembled it yourself? if this is so, did they give you an estimate for the labor cost for the total job? And what quality products did you get to replace the smaller stock, was it comparable to stock or was it higher end, more durable chromed out stuff. thanxs for the info that is exactly what i had in mind.

actually I didn't get an estimate from them. I just took it to them and told them what I needed. As for the machine work the most expensive thing was grinding the crank. it was $85. boring and honing the cylinders was only about $12 a cylinder.
the most expensive thing for me was the engine kit at $400 but it included everything I mentioned before. plus a new oil pump and timiing gears.
the type of equiptment that I put in there was just a little better than factory. But nothing too fancy.
I just used standard factory type pistons.
perfect circle rings
some type of alloy bearings(forget what brand..Clevite 77.????)
I did do all of the work myself. not a major job. I took it out one weekend and reassembled it and put it back in the next.
let me know if you have any more questions.

My 300 is bored .030 over, so it's a 304.6, it was re-built before I got it, so I don't know how much it cost, or what parts went in it. If you are going to get your block bored in teh persuit of performance, you'd be much better off investing in a cam, a .030 overbore might yeild 3 or 4 horsepower, and, it would mean that your engine could be rebuilt one less time... But, if it's worn to the point where it needs to be bored out, make sure it's bored the minimum possible, theres no sense in going way oversize unless you need to.

From what I've heard, .060 is about the max for a 300, after that you're risking core shift. A 300 is in no way a small engine, it's displacement close to a 302, so people think they're similar, nope, it has alot more in common with the 400, same bore, and nearly the same stroke, heck, the ports are even similar in size. They are a smooth running torque monster, but that's just an inherent I-6 trait :-)

those that have boared it out, do you notice and increase in exhaust sound as well as any other improvements. I would never do this as a way to improve the volume and depth of my exhaust sound because that would be stupid, but if it does give you a louder or richer sound that is always a +.
