Accourding to a couple places(websites) that I have been to, the 300 is pretty much running 145hp and 200ish torque stock. What would you suggest as the best, most cost efficent, and timely way to jump this thing from 145hp to along the lines of 200+. Right now all I have done to my 89 f-150 4 speed w/granny gear is put on a dual outlet flowmaster exhaust. I plan on getting a k&n FIPK, new headers, high-flow cats(will be a must because of valve making gas too rich) and that is where i am stuck. I would like to know what elso could be done that is fairly inexpensive and timely but will pay out greatly? thanx
A fuel injected 300 I6 is running around 260 foot pounds of torque at 2000 RPM. I don't know much about significantly increasing hp of this engine, but understand that the best thing for this motor is increased valve lift, which could be acheived through higher ratio rockers, but beware they don't hit the piston. I believe that increased valve lift on the 300 I6 is supposed to boost low end torque--the kind of power this engine was designed to put out. Getting a lot of hp probably means running higher RPMs. It can and has been done (they have 300 I6 powered dragsters) and you will find a lot of advice on this site if you go back through the old messages and archives. Also Clifford Performance sells a lot of performance parts for this engine and has a bulletin board where much 300 I6 hot rodding is discussed along with all brands of inline sixes.
Hello. Your on the right track. I have heard the 300-6 needs to breathe, so the exhaust is very important. A high flow cat and a good muffler will do wonders, also get rid of the factory air cleaner houseing. The more the engine breaths the more effecient and more power you will get from it. Also look into sidegapping the spark plugs. Greg.
1985 F-150, Black with black fiberglass cap. 300 6. Aluminum mag wheels, BF goodrich tires.
thanks for the info. yeah ive heard a hundred times that these trucks need to breath and i can almost see or should i say hear it when a person drives my truck or when my windows are down cause it sounds like a lot of air is being sucked and trying to be moved. I think the first thing for me is the FIPK filter from K&N cause I can do it myself and it works but only if it improved what it said it did(26horses).
