Check engine light
Hello. I have a 1985 F-150. The check engine light has been on since 70K miles. I have replaced everything that is related to the emissions. I've been told this light is just a reminder light that comes on at a certain mileage. So I read in the chilton manual how to reset it. It says to locate a small module that has a reset hole in it push it in and turn the truck on. I can't find the module anywhere. Anyone know where it is located? The stupid chilton manual says the reset hole is next to the light and of course it isn't. Greg.

Check engine light
One way I have heard of folks "re-setting" this light is with a piece of black electrical tape.
I recently read that the EPA wanted a warning light for malfunction of emissions equipment and knowing folks would ignore a light that said "check emissions equipment," they decided it should say "check engine" so that folks would get very concerned about their engine, take it in and have the emissions system repaired.

[link:ford-trucks.com/dcforum/80_96/172.html|This thread] tells the procedure for resetting the light. I never did find the reset box on mine, it somehow mysteriously (without even disconnecting the battery) reset itself.

1) You can read the codes yourself to see exactly what is wrong instead of replacing the entire emissions system, or whatever you did. This is explained in your Chilton's. My Chilton's says something about a light coming on at x amount of miles and it won't go away unless you do something special. I dunno if it is the check engine light or not. But, it also said that if it comes on prematurely the only way to get rid of it is to replace the module. I think that is crap and ridiculous. Ridiculous crap, maybe.
Your 85 doesn't use obd2, so a multitester scanner will read your codes for you.
